Warning: SPOILERS for Powers of X #2

The world of the X-Men has been turned upside down with the twists and turns of their House of X comic relaunch. But now Powers of X has dropped an even more unthinkable twist: revealing the last leader of Marvel's Mutants... is actually one of their greatest enemies.

Comic readers who have been following every step of Jonathan Hickman's X-Men event/relaunch already learned how Marvel's Earth will ultimately tear itself apart, erasing both Mutants and humans from the planet by the time the story reaches 1,000 years into the future. But the story also showed what's left of the X-Men 100 years from now, when all that remains is a small guerrilla force fighting against extinction--led by a mysterious "Old Man." Now, that mystery has been solved in a twist guaranteed to shock X-Men fans. The last man standing against the Mutant apocalypse... is the Mutant, Apocalypse.

It may seem like a bombshell for the sake of shock value, and some might have suspected as much when Apocalypse first appeared alongside the X-Men heroes in cover art for the series. But with his people standing on the brink of total annihilation... believing the X-Men's greatest foe would change sides is somewhat believable. Either way, it makes for a heck of a reveal in Powers of X #2, when the 'Old Man' shows his face:

Xmen Powers of X Apocalypse

There are sure to be some X-Men fans unwilling to believe that En Sabah Nur could EVER ally with the X-Men, no matter how desperate the circumstances. But it's important to note just how dire Mutantkind's situation is one century into Powers of X's future. Previous issues revealed that once the "Man-Machine Supremacy" claims Earth and drives Mutants off the planet, only a handful stick around to fight--literally. On a single asteroid base stands the total population of Mutants in our solar system: Magneto, Wolverine, Xorn, future soldiers Rasputin and Cardinal, and Krakoa (in a humanoid/plant form). And now, their leader Apocalypse.

The issues ends with a promise from Apocalypse that he will lead his team through a suicide mission and guarantee their success... which means Powers of X #3 can't get here soon enough. Check out the official credits and plot synopsis for Powers of X below:
