Warning: Spoilers for Immortal X-Men #10 ahead!Professor Charles Xavier has always been the leading face of mutant power among the X-Men, but the true extent of the depths of his power is quite disturbing. Despite having one of the most highly evolved minds on the planet, Xavier's secret power isn't psychic or physical; it's political. Although he argues his beneficence and applauds his restraint in not meddling as much as he could, Charles Xavier secretly controls the Marvel world.

Kieron Gillen, Lucas Werneck, and David Curiel's Immortal X-Men #10 picks up immediately in the aftermath of an attack on the Quiet Council by Mister Sinister. Narrated by Xavier, the resurrection of the Council members and the pursuit of Sinister plays out in the background while Xavier muses on the nature of mutant power and his role in placing checks upon it. As one example of what someone of ill-intent could do with the power he wields, Xavier reveals how easy it would be for him to place lethal triggers in the minds of every non-mutant on the planet. Conversely, he offers up what he has done along those lines: namely, covertly putting psychic blocks in the minds of every member of every functioning government that out-and-out prevents them from actually going forward with nuclear warfare.

Xavier Has Secretly Been Controlling The World

A narration of how Xavier psychically prevents global nuclear war. In the background, Mister Sinister is dragged into Krakoa's Pit.

This revelation comes at the cusp of Marvel's Sins of Sinister event, heralding a storyline where Mister Sinister will take control of the Marvel universe. To that end, Sinister has broken ranks with the Quiet Council of Krakoa. Brutally murdering half of the Council (including Hope, the linchpin of the mutant Resurrection Protocols), Sinister's flight from Krakoa signals the beginning of his latest master plan. While Sinister is known for his schemes and manipulations, the idea that Xavier has been implanting thoughts into the world's leaders and controlling global affairs make him just as bad as the longtime X-Men villain.

Although he says this as though it is a single, small, simple thing, the ramifications of Xavier crossing such a line are huge. This implies that Xavier has been quietly pulling the strings of every world government, every organization that could potentially trigger global nuclear war. After all, this is a world that includes bodies such as the nation of Wakanda or the engineers of A.I.M., organizations with hyper-advanced weaponry and vastly different causes and moral outlooks. To accomplish this feat, Xavier's influence would have been felt in every nation's policies as he set the safeguards in place across the world to prevent humanity from destroying itself.

While the end result has been that the world hasn't been torn apart by nuclear force (generally a good thing), the fact of the matter remains that Xavier has strings attached to every ruling body on the planet. In essence, he controls the world. While the only thing Professor Charles Xavier has actively done with that control is to read minds and enforce a general armistice, the amount of influence wielded by Marvel's most powerful hero and founder of the X-Men is disturbing.
