Famke Janssen is open to reprising the role of Jean Grey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actress was among the cast of the original X-Men film that debuted in 2000. She reprised her role three more times in X2, X: Men The Last Stand, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Sophie Turner eventually took over the role in the franchise's prequel timeline, but if there's any interest from Marvel Studios to bring her back as the powerful mutant, Jannsen says that she's willing to do it.

In late 2017, news broke out that Disney was in talks to acquire Fox's TV and movie assets. Despite its big implications in the industry as a whole, most Marvel fans zeroed in on the possibility of the long-separated X-Men and their tie-in characters to finally join the Avengers. The historic sale was finalized last year, which means that the idea is closer than ever to reality, and whatever Kevin Feige and his team are planning for the mutants, Janssen has expressed her interest in reprising her role as Jean Grey in the MCU.

Speaking with Observer in celebration of the original X-Men film's 20th anniversary, the actress was asked if she's willing to play her superhero role again in case Marvel Studios reach out. Jannsen recalled her last outing as Jean Grey in Days of Future Past, citing how interesting it was to spin her and the older version of the mutants' return. That said, she's also curious about what happens to the character in the MCU, and if the opportunity is presented to her, she'd be happy to step back into the superhero world for it.

“I think the question is more if they would have any interest in bringing me back With Days of Future Past, there was a surprise way of reintroducing certain characters that had been killed off. In some people’s cases, it was to bring them back as well as the younger versions of their characters. I’d be curious to see what happens [with Marvel Films]. But, yes, I would be very open to it.”

With the MCU on an extended break due to the coronavirus pandemic that has essentially shut down Hollywood, there's still no word about what Marvel Studios' plans are for the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and their tie-in characters. Feige has already laid out their Phase 4 plans and a couple of other things beyond that, but he has yet to give any indication about when, where, and how the mutants will be incorporated in the universe.  As of now, the only thing certain is their imminent arrival. Considering that Marvel Studios will have no presence at San Diego Comic-Con, which will be held virtually this year, it's safe to say that it will be a while before the public hears anything concrete about this matter.

It'll be interesting to see if Janssen and other of her fellow original X-Men cast members exist in the MCU. The general assumption from the public now is that Marvel Studios will be rebooting the franchise, meaning whatever happened in Fox's film series will not be adapted and characters will more likely be recast. All that being said, the MCU is also set to delve deeper into the concept of the multiverse. With this, perhaps they can find ways to incorporate whatever was established in the previous X-Men film franchise without convoluting the current continuity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
