Warning: SPOILERS for Marauders #1
When Marvel promised that the new Marauders would be the most important new X-Men book, fans knew to expect some unexpected twists and turns. What they probably didn't expect was to see the first case of a Krakoan feasting on human flesh. Even if it is a dragon resident.
To let fans breathe a sigh of relief, it isn't one of the mutant cannibals welcomed by the X-Men to the mutant nation, although that may be a problem for another day. No, the culprit is Lockheed, the dragon accomplice to the Marauders' new leader, Kate Pryde. Apparently there is more wiggle room in the Krakoan laws governing mutant violence (and consumption?) regarding their lesser, human neighbors.
Over the course of the first issue, the winged warrior finds and delivers meals, noted by Kate (in hindsight, almost a little too overtly, as if setting up this shocking gag). It all builds to the final example, when Lockheed returns to perch on Kate's shoulder... with two bloody human fingers in its mouth. There one panel, swallowed the next.
Just to make sure there was no confusion over the act, writer Gerry Duggan took to Twitter (via CBR) to confirm that Lockheed's decision to bite off, then eat parts of a human being don't violate the new rules put in place by Krakoa's council of mutant leaders. According to him, "Marauders knows the rules. The rule of three is sacred, and "Murder No Man" doesn't mean "F*** No Man Up." Well, there you have it.
For those wondering, the size or cuteness of Lockheed, or the fact that Kate found the dragon on an alien world and instantly adopted the sidekick, can't change the fact that the dragon is NOT a pet. Lockheed is an intelligent, reasoning alien life form. Which makes the eating of fingers... well, more disturbing, and not less. Here's hoping that it's only a joke, and not part of the next philosophical crisis to hit Krakoa. Readers can find the full issue details and plot synopsis below:
