They say like attracts like. In Empyre X-Men #4, a possessed Magik she sets her sites on fellow teleporter and demon-dimension dweller Nightcrawler... for precisely one second.

Previously, Magik (Illyana Rasputina) was possessed by a magic staff. As such, Magik's normal megalomania dialed up from a 6 to a 10, and she proclaimed herself the Zombie Queen of Genosha. She also took on the form of a demon. In Empyre X-Men #4 by Jonathan Hickman, Lucas Gomes Werneck, and Jorge Molina, after the immediate threat of a giant plant-zombie hybrid is defeated, Magik declares that everyone on the island is now her slave, from a bemused Kid Omega to a disgusted Mr. Sinister. She singles out Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner) though, to “serve [her] most of all” finding his appearance "dashing."

Unbeknownst to Magik, one month ago the Scarlet Witch had enlisted Dr. Strange to counteract her spell. Dr. Strange ensured that the spell would end when the magic staff naturally dissipated into its component pieces, a process that Dr. Strange estimated would take about 30 days. Flash forward to Magik declaring her attraction to Kurt 29 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds after Dr. Strange cast the counter-spell. The staff dissipates, and Magik returns to her normal self, declaring that she “had a little moment there.”

Magik Zombie Queen

Readers familiar with both characters might wonder, though, how much of that was the staff talking? While a possessed Magik demanding a non-consensual relationship from Kurt is troubling, it might reveal a legitimate down-to-earth attraction. First, both of them are mutant teleporters. Secondly, both of them (can) look alike. Kurt has always been shunned for his demonic appearance, and Magik takes on a demonic appearance when she wields her Soulsword.

Most significantly though, both have had their lives torn apart by demonic father figures. Magik was kidnapped by the self-proclaimed "demon" Belasco and raised in the hell dimension of Limbo. Belasco corrupted and twisted pieces of her soul to create powerful magical artifacts, including her aforementioned Soulsword. Meanwhile, Nightcrawler's biological father is Azazel, a red-furred teleporter who is the father of an entire race of Neyaphem: mutants who look like traditional demons. He sired Nightcrawler simply to use him as a gateway to escape the Brimstone Dimension. Perhaps these similarities are why Magik declares "I regret nothing" after her profession of attraction.

Nightcrawler X-Men Roof

Nor might this be a one-way attraction only. Nightcrawler is known to date sorceresses who swash-buckle in afterlife dimensions, but his steady girlfriend Jimaine Szardos has been semi-dead for some time. Might the upcoming X of Swords feature dashing fencer Nightcrawler wooing Soulsword wielder Magik? This would certainly be a storyline more in keeping with Nightcrawler's character than his recent crisis of faith, (if it even deserves to be called that). Perhaps this one-second crush will be more than a crush after all.
