This article contains spoilers for Juggernaut #1.

The X-Men's Juggernaut has just gained a sidekick in D-Cel, the one girl with the power to slow him down. Cain Marko is a classic X-Men villain, empowered by the mystical being Cyttorak to wreak havoc. Still, as much as Juggernaut may be a force of destruction, he's frequently found himself stepping up in defense of the mutants. In fact, in 2019's Uncanny X-Men #16, Juggernaut actually joined the X-Men. As he explained to a stunned Multiple Man, "First they came for the mutants and I didn't speak up..."

Juggernaut paid a hefty price for his heroism, because the crystal of Cyttorak was torn out of his chest and he was banished to the demonic realm of Limbo. Somehow he's returned in this week's Juggernaut #1 - by Fabian Nicieza, Ron Garney, and Matt Milla - and he's even rocking new armor. But the world has moved on while Marko has been AWOL, and mutants aren't a persecuted minority anymore. Instead, the entire mutant community has gathered on the living island of Krakoa, recognized as a new country by the United Nations (albeit with a little psychic persuasion from Emma Frost). All this means Juggernaut is now a man without a cause. So he's gone and gotten himself a job working for Damage Control, demolishing buildings that are structurally unstable.

Juggernaut #1 sees Cain Marko gain something else as well; a sidekick. Juggernaut is planning to knock down a block of buildings that have been badly damaged during a superhero fight when he finds himself confronted by a group of squatters. To Juggernaut's surprise, he's soon going up against a teenage girl called D-Cel, who's stepped up in the squatters' defense. D-Cel possesses the power to generate deceleration fields, and she's even possible to turn the Juggernaut's momentum to a crawl.

Marvel D-Cel

Juggernaut has often had a tender side to his character, and D-Cel's tough attitude appeals to him. As a result, when she's injured in their brief fight, he makes sure Damage Control take her to hospital - and then he sticks by her side until she wakes up. D-Cel still gives Juggernaut lip even recovering from a concussion, much to Cain Marko's amusement. Next thing he knows, he's accepting an assignment from her - and planning a rematch with the Hulk.

There's something distinctly odd going on with Juggernaut. The Crystal of Cyttorak was torn from his chest, and yet he's somehow regained his power, and gotten a new armor to boot. Stranger still, Cyttorak usually requires Juggernaut to cause destruction in repayment for the power he grants him, and yet Marko is now holding down an actual job, and there's no hint of a desire to cause chaos. The last time Juggernaut picked up a sidekick, on a previous attempt to earn redemption, things didn't turn out well; the boy was killed. Hopefully this time Juggernaut is a little more stable, and D-Cel will fare better.
