This article contains spoilers for X-Men #12.

X-Men comics have retconned Jean Grey's powers - again. It's always been difficult to get a handle on just how powerful Jean Grey really is. In part that's because of her mysterious connection to the Phoenix Force, because she's so intimately tied to this cosmic entity that it's difficult to figure out where one begins and the other ends. But it's also because Marvel Comics don't seem able to make up their minds.

Jonathan Hickman took readers by surprise back in 2019, when he finally defined what it means to be an Omega level mutant. According to House of X #1, an Omega is "a mutant whose dominant power is deemed to register -- or reach -- an undefinable upper limit of that power's specific classification." The data page went on to note the term is used to refer to only a single mutant power; according to Hickman, few mutants possess more than one Omega level ability. Jean Grey, he clarified in the data page, is no exception to this role; she is an Omega level telepath, but not an Omega level telekinetic.

Hickman has now left the X-books, and amusingly it hasn't taken long for Marvel to retcon this. X-Men #12, by Gerry Duggan and Pepe Larraz, features numerous scenes in which the X-Men discuss Jean Grey's Omega level telekinesis as well as her telepathy. Indeed, the comic presents one of the most spectacular demonstrations of Jean's power to date, as she telekinetically grasps countless spores from a creature named Cordyceps Jones. She's assisted by Rogue, who copies her telekinetic abilities and explicitly refers to them as Omega level.

In truth, nobody ready expected these definitions to last long after Hickman's departure. In Jean's case, it's largely because she's too well-established as an Omega level telekinetic in the first place, with a phenomenal number of feats to her name. In one story Jean even telekinetically deflected Black Bolt's powers - sonic blasts that can level mountains. Incredibly, she didn't even appear to be exerting any effort.

It seems, then, that Jean Grey fans can happily call her an Omega level telekinetic once again. Jean's powers have been re-retconned, returning her to the power levels she operated at before the Hickman era, and that's for the best because the clarification was unnecessary, contradicting established lore. The re-retcon also potentially serves as setup for the next wave of X-Men stories, which promise to clarify Jean Grey's relationship with the Phoenix once and for all. Hopefully once all this is over, the X-Men's Jean Grey will settle back into a more stable status quo.
