This article contains spoilers for AXE: Judgment Day #3.

Psychic powerhouse Jean Grey will need to turn on Krakoa's ruling Quiet Council if she is to save the X-Men and the entire mutant race. When Professor X and Magneto established the mutant nation of Krakoa, they chose to establish what can only be called a mutant dictatorship rather than a democracy. Krakoa's ruling Quiet Council consists of self-appointed leaders, and they hoard power, keeping many secrets from their fellow mutants.

Unsurprisingly, it's all beginning to fall apart. Magneto and Professor X kept secrets even from the other members of the Quiet Council, but some of these have been exposed, shaking any semblance of trust. Mystique outmaneuvered Professor X, resurrecting her wife Destiny and arranging for her to become a member of the Quiet Council, and Professor X's latest appointee Colossus has actually been compromised by a Russian villain who is controlling his mind. Cyclops, Emma Frost, and Jean Grey are beginning to co-ordinate their efforts to show another way, with Cyclops and Jean deliberately establishing democratic processes to choose new members of the X-Men.

AXE: Judgment Day #3, by Kieron Gillen and Valerio Schiti, proves Jean Grey will need to go to more drastic lengths to unseat the Quiet Council. The Avengers have unwittingly recreated a long-dormant Celestial, who casts judgment on the manipulative approach of the Quiet Council, finding them wanting. Jean learns just how unwise their approaches may be when she is tricked into launching an attack on the Celestial, one that risks causing a shock wave that will kill millions. It's actually only a psychic projection from the Celestial, but it's enough to leave Jean furious that essential information would be withheld by the Quiet Council. As she reacts in fury, the Celestial decides to reserve judgment on Jean Grey, presumably curious to see what she will do.

The Celestial's judgment is inscrutable, but it seems to principally object to the manipulative ways of the Quiet Council - a pointed criticism of the entire system of government established by Professor X. Jean Grey chose to leave the Quiet Council to co-lead the X-Men, showing the Krakoans there is another way, but the events of AXE: Judgment Day #3 surely mean she'll have to go one step further. Krakoa needs a coup if it is to survive the Celestial judgment, with the Quiet Council deposed and new democratic systems established in its place.

Marvel has confirmed Jean Grey is a key player in AXE: Judgment Day, and until now it's seemed most of the focus would lie on her past connection to the Phoenix Force. But the Celestial appears to be judging people for their present, not their past, and it is therefore most interested in Jean's current actions. It presumably senses that Jean Grey is in a place where she could change the future of the X-Men and the entire mutant race, and it will be thrilling to see how things play out.
