Potential spoilers ahead for Inferno #1!

Marvel has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming X-Men event Inferno. The four-issue miniseries, which kicks off the next chapter in Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men revamp, will be on sale in print and digital this September.

In 2019, after definitive runs on Fantastic Four and the Avengers, writer Jonathan Hickman turned his attention to Marvel’s mutants. In House of X/Powers of X mini-series, Hickman injected new life into the franchise, giving mutants their homeland: the island paradise of Krakoa. There, all mutants were welcome, and all transgressions were forgiven. Furthermore, the inhabitants of Krakoa have access to technology that allows them to cheat death: the Resurrection Protocols. Any mutant that dies can be brought back to life on Krakoa, thanks to backups the island creates; the X-Men keep this a secret from the outside world. This technology, while saving many lives, is slowly becoming more and more of an issue, and it is the Resurrection Protocols that lead directly to the events of Inferno. The miniseries is written by Jonathan Hickman, with art by Valerio Schiti, RB Silva, and Stefano Caselli.

A new trailer for the event was posted to Marvel’s Twitter account. Both Mystique and Destiny were confirmed earlier to be Inferno’s main players, and as the trailer begins, fans see the two sitting together, watching the sunset. Destiny, who has psychic powers, cautions her lover about the rise of Krakoa. Destiny tells her the island will seem like a paradise, but underneath the surface it is rotten. She also tells Mystique about the Resurrection Protocols, and that she must be brought back—but if Krakoa’s leaders do not allow her to be resurrected, then Mystique is to burn it down. The trailer also spotlights the other major players in Inferno, namely Moira McTaggert, who has morphed from a staunch ally to a deadly threat.

The Resurrection Protocols were meant to elevate mutantkind above the rest of humanity, but it is driving an increasingly larger wedge into mutant society. They triggered an existential meltdown in Nightcrawler, who saw them as a challenge to his faith; fans have also seen that a hierarchy has developed, one that stresses who gets resurrected before who. Furthermore, readers have seen some mutants have not been resurrected—Destiny among them. It is odd that Destiny has not been resurrected yet—is this because the psychic poses a threat to Krakoa? Whatever the Council’s reason, Mystique will make them pay for their mistake, even if it means destroying Krakoa itself.

Jonathan Hickman’s grand vision for the X-Men moves into its next phase with Inferno, and now Marvel has released a new teaser trailer for the event, which will be in stores this September.
