X-Men: First Class: Mystique Trailer

X-Men First Class Mystique character trailer

Yesterday brought us some wonderful X-Men: First Class character trailers, featuring Banshee, Beast and Havok, three of the young mutants that Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) recruits for his first class of X-Men.

There was near unanimous sentiment amongst fans that these character trailers are the best bit of marketing yet for First Class, which has seen some tragically poor posters bearing its name.

While the theatrical trailers for X-Men: First Class haven't been bad, per se, the seeming break with X-Men comic book continuity and generic action scenes weren't enough to sway the most ardent of naysayers. The release of these character trailers has finally shown keyboard critics something that we here at Screen Rant have been saying for a while: that director Matthew Vaughn may not be making an X-Men movie that follows the comics, but he indeed seems to be making one that will capture the core essence of the comic better than any X-Men film before it. Ironic, no?

Today's character trailer features Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) as Mystique. Lawrence - like McAvoy as Professor Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Magneto - has an especially hard task in the film, having to play a character that was already defined by the performance of Rebecca Romijn in the original X-Men movie trilogy.

However, aside from some truly memorable sequences from X2, Romijn's version of Mystique was mostly used as eye candy in the original trilogy. Based on this character trailer, it seems that First Class will treat Mystique as a much more pivotal and thoroughly developed character - one who will be a vehicle for questions of identity (literally and figuratively) as she ultimately goes from being a young mutant literally hiding in her own skin, to being the confident blue she-wolf who guards Magneto's back.

Take a look at what's in store for Mystique in X-Men: First Class

Lawrence is one of the hottest young actresses around right now (again, I mean that literally and figuratively), having scored the leading role in the upcoming adaptation of The Hunger Games, as well as this potential franchise role as Mystique in First Class. The girl clearly has the looks and the chops to tackle strong and complicated female characters, and that makes her a perfect fit for a morally gray character like Mystique. I dare say that Lawrence may ending up running circles around Rebecca Romijn's performance, by the time all is said and done.
