Marvel's upcoming Empyre event will see the X-Men raise an army of "the mutant undead" against an invasion of "alien plants." 2020's first major comic book event will see the Kree and Skrull empires unite under the leadership of the Young Avenger named Hulkling, and launch a coordinated invasion of Earth.

This time around, the alien invasion will affect the entire globe. As such, Marvel is gradually announcing a range of tie-ins affecting almost all their various superheroes. That's naturally led to speculation the X-Men will be invaded as well, given the entire mutant race has now gathered on the mutant nation of Krakoa. They probably have the highest concentration of powered people per square mile on the planet. What's more, Charles Xavier has a history with the Skrulls, having sided with Skrull mutants in an uprising at one point, so the aliens will be wary of giving him a chance to strike back.

Marvel has just announced the official X-Men Empyre tie-in and it's certainly a curveball. Here's the full teaser:

IT'S ALIEN PLANTS VS MUTANT ZOMBIES IN EMPYRE: X-MEN

It’s going to be a battle so monumental that it’ll take the entire writing crew of the X-Men to depict it! The intergalactic visitors coming to Earth in Marvel’s 2020 event will be arriving just in time to face off against an army of mutant undead this May in EMPYRE: X-MEN. Don’t miss the X-Men’s strange return to Genosha in this unpredictable series written by all your favorite current X-Men writers. It all begins in EMPYRE: X-MEN #1 written by Head of X Jonathan Hickman and writer of Excalibur, Tini Howard, and continues in EMPYRE: X-MEN #2 written by Gerry Duggan (Marauders), Benjamin Percy (X-Force, Wolverine), and Leah Williams, writer of the highly anticipated series, X-Factor.

It seems that, for some unknown reason, the X-Men return to the island of Genosha. Situated off the southeastern African coast, northwest from Seychelles and northeast of Madagascar, Genosha was the first mutant nation. It became the site of one of the greatest tragedies in mutant history when rogue Sentinels slaughtered the island's population of 16.5 million, an act of genocide that left just 986,618 mutants alive on the planet. The X-Men are currently using a blend of Cerebro technology and super-powers to resurrect the mutant fallen, and they have the stated goal of bringing back every mutant who's ever died. But, for some reason, the X-Men's return to Genosha will see them raise what Marvel's calling "an army of mutant undead." It sounds as though something is going to go badly wrong with the X-Men's resurrection protocols - which explains why Leah Williams is involved, given her upcoming X-Factor book will focus on those protocols.

The reference to "alien plants" is just as bewildering. It could potentially refer to the Cotati, a plant-race who was almost rendered extinct during the Dark Phoenix Saga, and who've historically blamed the X-Men given Jean Grey is one of their key players. Empyre will introduce the Celestial Messiah, the son of Mantis and a Cotati male who was conceived during the "Celestial Madonna" saga. It's possible the Celestial Messiah harbors some ill will towards the X-Men, and thus that the invasion becomes a lot more personal. Ultimately, it won't be long until we find out.
