The most unique attribute to the leader of the X-Men, Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops has always predominantly been his custom made ruby quartz visor. The visor not only keeps Scott's powerful optic blasts in check but permits other individuals from seeing the true world beneath his protective shield. But, how does Cyclops view the world?

While Cyclops cannot open his eyes without his visor in fear of putting others in danger, Summers is free to pry his eyes open when they are covered by the visor. Throughout the decades, both in comics and film, Cyclops has become a character who has become synonymous with wearing his visor (or an equally effective pair of ruby quartz sunglasses) constantly, whether it is in battle or simply hanging around the Xavier Institute. But there have been certain X-Men comic storylines which have begun to explore exactly how Scott sees through his visor.

In order to be an effective leader of a large team of superheroes, Scott would need to see in some form or another. The great mutant power behind Scott is his optic blasts which keep Scott's mutant abilities at bay but have the unfortunate side effect of preventing the mutant from seeing the world as clear as everyone else. Grant Morrison's New X-Men #131 and Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men #14 were two comics that offered a glimpse into the true world behind Cyclops' visor. Though many of Cyclops' general qualities and leadership skills are intact, both comic titles offer varying interpretations on what lies beneath the visor of the X-Men's most famous field leader.

With New X-Men #131, during a return flight home on the X-Plane, Cyclops has a lengthy discussion with fellow X-Men member, the White Queen a.k.a. Emma Frost, which quickly shifts to the enigma that is Scott's particular worldview. According to Scott himself, the light inside the ruby quartz shield evokes more of a yellow tinge than anything else. From the outside, Scott's visor clearly displays a red hue but there is much more to this than quite meets the eye (no pun intended). Concurrently, Whedon's take on Cyclops in Astonishing X-Men offers yet another version of the fascinating world inside the visor, which is created to be a blue transparent environment, albeit tinged with red.

Nevertheless, the mystery concerning Cyclops' visor will undoubtedly remain a major point of discussion amongst die-hard X fans. The answer that fans may not be receptive to is likely that the truth behind Cyclops' visor may never be given a definitive conclusion. There are always going to be new writers and artists who come on board to tell their own spin on the X-Men characters, which will likely involve their own particular version of Scott Summers and his puzzling worldview beneath the visor.
