This article contains spoilers for X-Force #12.

The X-Men have called out one of their own, Colossus, as a traitor. In theory, the establishment of the mutant nation of Krakoa should have meant mutants were safer than ever. In reality, the United Nations only approved the founding of Krakoa with the help of a little telepathic persuasion from Emma Frost. Anti-mutant forces are growing in power and influence worldwide, and frankly, it's beginning to look as though the X-Men may unwittingly trigger World War III.

The prime aggressor is Russia, a country that - in the Marvel Universe - has long viewed mutants as weapons. Russia is developing its own mutant army to use against Krakoa, and the X-Men are preparing their own counteroffensive. They intended Colossus to be at the heart of the effort, but he was badly injured (and possibly killed and resurrected), and appears to be suffering from a form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Colossus never wanted to be a warrior, so he's retreated to the Savage Land and is enjoying being a farmer.

Until this week's X-Force #12, which sees Colossus brought back to Krakoa in the most shocking way possible. The X-Men discover Colossus' evil brother Mikhail is responsible for a recent attack on Krakoa, and three members of X-Force are sent to bring him in. Beast is convinced Colossus is a traitor, and he calls him out in a public display; he places handcuffs on Colossus' hands for symbolic purposes (he knows Piotr could rip through them with ease), and then leads him through a gateway to Krakoa. There, Colossus discovers Beast has established a new ceremony on Krakoa; the Traitor's Parade. As many mutants as possible are assembled to witness Colossus being brought in, to judge him and condemn him, to emphasize his guilt.

X-Men Traitor's Parade

It's a pretty extreme reaction on Beast's part, but he justifies it by deeming it necessary. "A little fear and paranoia keep people safe," Beast reflects. "It's possible our citizens may come forward with valuable information about their neighbors. It's certain our citizens will know that being watched is the same as being watched over." Beast is proving himself the most dangerous X-Man on Krakoa, and this logic is distinctly fascistic. Making matters worse, Colossus is entirely innocent.

Apparently Beast intends to conduct the Traitor's Parade ceremony with any mutant who has ties to Russia. He may well find he is overreaching, because one of those mutants is Magik, Colossus' little sister, and Magik is a Captain of Krakoa. What's more, while Colossus stands and gapes at the Traitor's Parade, Magik would lash out. Frankly, the X-Men's Beast had better be watching his back, because Magik is likely to take him down for what he's just done to her big brother.
