WARNING: Spoiler for X-Men #5 ahead!

Thanks to the prevalence of superhuman activity in the area, the citizens of New York City in Marvel Comics have been through a lot; thankfully, in the upcoming X-Men #5 the Krakoan mutants are showing up in a big way for the people of NYC, proving that they are better heroes than even the Avengers are. While the nation of Krakoa has made some efforts to formally separate itself from the human population of the world, they have also established the Treehouse in NYC, giving human citizens support that their local governments and superheroes have not.

The Treehouse seemingly grew overnight in the historic Seneca Village neighborhood of New York City, paying homage to the former Black community whose residents were gentrified out of the area, and is a complex combination of natural and technological advancements, open to mutants and humans alike. But the latest X-Men team is now going further, extending their reach beyond the Treehouse and starting a new tradition of offering their service, energy, and resources to supporting to people of New York. This is much deserved, as New Yorkers have recently been through the events of King in Black and are consistently having their homes and communities wrecked by supervillains and heroes alike.

In X-Men #5 - illustrated by Ze Carlos, Erick Arciniega, and Javier Pina with writing by Gerry Duggan - the newly formed team sends out an open letter to all New Yorkers inviting them to an event to support the local community, reading, "Please join the X-Men... as we give thanks for our many gifts and share in Krakoa's bounty with our neighbors." The X-Men, in collaboration with Emma Frost's Hellfire Trading Company, are offering free food from their Krakoan gardens, telepathic mental health counseling, mutant healing, legal services, and duffle bags with clothes for folks who are houseless. Check out the letter below:

By showing up to offer on-the-ground support to the citizens of NYC, the X-Men are demonstrating that they are more capable of supporting systemic change than NYC's resident superhero team, the Avengers. The Avengers are an amazing team of powerful fighters who take on some of NYC's and the universe's biggest threats, but Knull and Dormammu are not the only things impacting humans, and this sort of outreach can be equally life-saving.

The X-Men have long been judged and condemned by humans, so to be so willing and open to offer their support and resources to a community that has historically oppressed them is a very powerful thing. The Krakoan nation is thanking the people of NYC for allowing them to build the Treehouse in their community and by starting this new tradition of supporting the local human community it is clear that this relationship will only become more beneficial and symbiotic. Hopefully, it will eventually also include the Avengers. Things are changing quickly for the mutants of Krakoa, but the X-Men is still here to protect humanity.
