Magik, the X-Men's demonic teleporter, is about to join the Savage Avengers. The little sister of Colossus, Illyana Rasputin was brought up in a Hellish alternate dimension, and is one of Marvel's most powerful sorceresses. In fact, in some timelines she succeeded Doctor Strange as Sorceress Supreme.

Even in the main Marvel Universe, though, Magik has proven herself to be one of Doctor Strange's most powerful allies. In fact, during Brian Bendis' Uncanny X-Men run her mystic potential expanded dramatically when she was forced to absorb the demonic realm of Limbo into herself. She sought the help of Doctor Strange, and apprenticed to him for a time. Strange learned to trust Magik, in spite of her ruthless and occasionally malevolent edge, and even lent her the Eye of Agamotto. And now, it looks as though Doctor Strange is about to ask Magik to join his team of deadly Avengers.

Marvel has released a preview of Savage Avengers #0, in which Strange asks Magik to join the team in order to deal with the dark sorcerer Kulan Gath. It makes sense for Strange to turn to Magik for help; she has a history with Kulan Gath, who was a major villain in the X-Men's "Inferno" event.

The official solicit declares that "the looming threat of Kulan Gath reunites Dr. Strange and Magik on Krakoa. The fate of the world will rest in what they discover." It looks as though Strange goes to Magik because of her history with Kulan Gath, and together they conduct some sort of mystical investigation to learn the truth behind this powerful foe. No word yet on how this will connect to Strange's new, armored, Iron Mage form.

The timing of this is hardly a coincidence. Magik is about to make her big-screen debut in the upcoming New Mutants movie, and there are signs Marvel think this may well be a success. Inhumans proved that a poor adaptation can damage a comic book brand, and yet the X-Men relaunch includes a New Mutants book. Artists have begun to draw the character of Wolfsbane to resemble Maisie Williams, the actress who plays her in the film. And Magik's profile is increasing as well; she's set to appear in the Strange Academy book, and is now joining an Avengers team.

All in all, it really does provide support to those who think New Mutants will actually perform well at the box office, with Marvel getting their comics ready to capitalize on the success.
