This article contains spoilers for X-Men '92: House of XCII #3.Marvel Comics has finally given the X-Men's Cyclops the lightsaber he deserves. Cyclops has long been considered the X-Men's greatest leader, and in large part that's because he leads from the front. Other leaders may shirk from battle, but Cyclops is always on the front lines, his brilliant strategic mind putting together plans at lightning speed.

Marvel's 2020 X-Men event, X of Swords, saw the X-Men forced to participate in a number of duels in Otherworld. Marvel initially teased the event with artwork showing countless mutants wielding their own blades - and Cyclops had a particularly appropriate crimson lightsaber. In Star Wars, a crimson lightsaber is the hallmark of the Sith; it signifies a kyber crystal that has been "bled" using the dark side, aligning it with evil. It's safe to assume that Cyclops' red lightsaber was simply a nod to the color of his optic blasts, because the tightly-wound Scott Summers seems unlikely to fall to the dark side. Unfortunately, it turned out this delightful image was purely promotional. Cyclops was never given the lightsaber.

Marvel's new X-Men '92: House of XCII miniseries by Steve Foxe, Salva Espin, and Israel Silva is something of a "What If...?" tale, an imaginary scenario in which some key events from current X-Men comics happened in the X-Men: The Animated Series timeline. X-Men '92: House of XCII #3 is a riff on X of Swords, with the classic heroes participating in duels on the mystical planet Polemachus rather than on Otherworld. This time, Cyclops is one of the mutants called to do battle - and he finally gets to wield that red lightsaber.

X-Men House of XCII Duel

Amusingly, X-Men '92: House of XCII #3 never really explains why its heroes all suddenly have swords. It handles them better than the original event, however; the blades in X of Swords often turned out to be misdirection, serving more as an entry requirement to travel to Otherworld than as a tool in the battle. Foxe's script at least gives the X-Men a reason to take weapons with them when they head to Polemachus, because it sees the heroes join battle in a rather more traditional manner.

Unfortunately, Cyclops doesn't really use the lightsaber much - not even in this strange What If...? timeline. Instead, he resorts to his typical ranged attacks, unleashing his powerful optic blasts on his enemies. It doesn't go terribly well in this case, because they've clearly prepared for this X-Men attack, meaning Cyclops' optic blasts are effortlessly reflected back on to his allies. It's perhaps a good job Cyclops wasn't one of the chosen combatants in the original X of Swords event after all.
