The global tech media is rife with speculations on whether Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi will introduce a Dynamic Island-like feature in one of its upcoming smartphones. The Dynamic Island is one of the highlight features of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, despite the presence of other notable features, such as always-on display and satellite connectivity. The new design has received a positive response from most quarters, with many would-be buyers saying that it is a positive step forward from the unseemly notch that had started to show its age.

Many Android manufacturers promptly copy anything Apple does, and the Dynamic Island is not expected to be any different. The feature has already been copied by a third-party Xiaomi theme developer currently working on a Dynamic Island-style notification area for Android devices running Xiaomi's proprietary MIUI skin. The new theme, which is now under review by Xiaomi, is reportedly called 'Grumpy UI' and is entirely in Chinese. It is unclear whether it will support English and other languages once it's approved by Xiaomi and is available for download by general users.

Online speculations suggest that Xiaomi's upcoming Redmi K60 smartphone could ship with a Dynamic Island-style feature called 'Smart Island.' The discussions started after Xiaomi China President Lu Weibing replied to a fellow user on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, asking if they "really need a smart Island" on their Xiaomi phones. The question came after the user requested Xiaomi to bring the iPhone 14 Pro's headline design feature to the company's Redmi K60 smartphone. Many users responded to the thread, most seemingly agreeing that a similar feature would add to the appeal of the new smartphone.

While many media reports immediately interpreted the conversation and Weibing's reply as a sign that the company is already working on introducing the feature on its upcoming devices, there are contrarian views. These claim that Weibing was shutting down such requests, saying that the feature isn't really necessary on Xiaomi devices.

One such doubter is Xiaomi aficionado and tech journalist Kacper Skrzypek, who pointed out a forum post by an MIUI developer who said that the company has decided not to implement a Dynamic Island-like feature in its upcoming devices for now. So, for now, it looks like the new feature will not make it to Xiaomi's next-gen smartphones, but with so much demand for the new feature, it won't be a surprise if the company decides to implement it at some stage in the future.
