Xiaomi has big plans for its future smartphone camera game starting with its newly unveiled retractable lenses. The smartphone giant explained the benefits of its innovative camera design during its recent Mi Developer Conference event. With Xiaomi smartphone's cameras often considered among the best, it's no surprise that the company is now increasing its efforts in producing even better photography hardware.

The company is known for challenging the smartphone camera norms by releasing phones with significantly more camera lenses and/or main shooters that go over one hundred megapixels. Xiaomi continues to release phones with high-end camera hardware at lower prices, producing and shipping them out in more quantities each year. In fact, its recent phone shipment numbers were almost double the previous year's, surpassing Apple in the process.

Xiaomi is now focusing its attention on its new “self-developed” retractable wide-aperture lens. In a blog post, the company claims that the innovative camera lens can significantly increase image clarity, contrast, sharpness, and the overall quality of photos. The retractable telescopic design reportedly delivers better performance in portrait and night photography by increasing the amount of light it draws in by 300-percent. In addition, it's also capable of increasing the sharpness of images by up to 20-percent, thanks to the improved image stabilization technology.

Xiaomi's Innovative Efforts Continue

Today's smartphone cameras are usually equipped with similar wide-aperture lenses, but most of them utilize fixed aperture, meaning users won't have much control in the amount of light they let in while taking photos. However, Xiaomi is starting to change that by introducing retractable camera hardware that can adapt to the users needs, giving them more control overall. The practice of incorporating hardware typically seen in actual cameras into smartphones can often result in bulky and less-appealing camera designs, but Xiaomi appears to be making strides to avoid that issue. Then again, this shouldn't be too surprising coming from a company that not only makes popular smartphones, but a variety of tech products, including see-through TVs.

It doesn't seem like Xiaomi is slowing down when it comes to being the first in unveiling smartphone innovations, such as its previously announced 80-watt wireless charger that can charge phones incredible quickly. The company's continued efforts are now starting to shake up the smartphone camera landscape as well, with Xiaomi's adaptable lenses that are not only portable enough for a smartphone, but don't compromise on quality.
