Xiaomi has unveiled new smartphone wired charging tech that can fully charge a phone with a large 4,000 mAh battery in just eight minutes. A wireless charger also shown off can fully charge a phone in 15 minutes. Xiaomi has been continually pushing the boundaries of charging technology as it seeks to develop innovations that it can eventually integrate into its consumer devices.

In October last year, it showed off its 80W Mi Wireless Charging Technology that could fill a 4,000 mAh battery from empty in 19 minutes. That's faster than most wired chargers can fill smaller smartphone batteries. For reference, the iPhone 12 has a 2,815 mAh battery and GSMArena.com tests found that a full charge with Apple's 20W wired charger takes an hour and a half, while its 15W wireless MagSafe Charger takes three hours to give a full charge.

Xiaomi's so-called HyperCharge wired charger kicks out at 200W and its wireless charger at 120W. It claims that both deliver world record charging speeds. The technology is experimental, so it's not possible to rush out and buy a HyperCharge charger, but the research will help Xiaomi to drive up the speeds that the chargers it does offer can deliver.

What Will Xiaomi's HyperCharge Charger Tech Lead To?

Xiaomi HyperCharge charging speeds

Xiaomi's flagship Mi 11 smartphone that launched in January has 55W wired and 50W wireless charging capabilities, which it says translate to 45-minute and 53-minute full charge times, respectively. These still represent excellent speeds and have no doubt been made possible by Xiaomi's past charging research. Its next flagship can certainly be expected to better those speeds again.

It's not just charging speeds that Xiaomi is working on, though. It's also been developing technology that can charge a smartphone from up to several meters away in a room. While it currently only kicks out at 5W, it doesn't take a lot to envisage the long-term benefits of this sort of approach. The charging experience would begin to fade into the background as phones began charging seamlessly when they entered a room.

Despite its continued innovation in charging technology, Xiaomi has also followed the lead of other smartphone manufacturers in beginning to sell devices with just charging cables rather than charging units too. The aim of this is to reduce e-waste in the recognition that many smartphone users already have chargers from previous devices that can be used. It is, in a sense, innovation on another front.
