It’s been five years since Xenoblade Chronicles X released on the Nintendo Wii U. The game, a standalone spiritual successor to the Wii’s Xenoblade Chronicles, is a massive open world action RPG developed by Monolith Soft. Centering around the exploration of the planet Mira, the game was met with praise from critics and fans, and won several video game awards. Despite all the acclaim, Xenoblade Chronicles X didn’t sell well due to the poor sales of the Wii U system. Since that time, a lot has changed: Nintendo has a new console, the Switch, which is selling immensely better than the Wii U, and the Xenoblade Chronicles series is more popular than ever.

There are a few factors that can really play into the success of Xenoblade Chronicles X, often abbreviated XCX, re-releasing. The biggest of these factors is the incredibly high sales numbers of the Nintendo Switch compared to those of the Wii U. Nintendo released the Switch in 2017, and it has since sold over 60 million units to date and often sells out at retailers. Compared to the Wii U’s abysmal 13 million units sold worldwide, it’s easy to see why Xenoblade Chronicles X would do infinitely better on the newer console.

Developer Monolith Soft may be too busy with the Breath of the Wild sequel to release XCX right now. Still, the fact that Nintendo hasn’t re-released Xenoblade Chronicles X on Switch yet is especially surprising when considering how well the Xenoblade series has done lately. In 2017, Nintendo and Monolith Soft released Xenoblade Chronicles 2, a direct sequel to the first Xenoblade game on the Wii. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was met with similar acclaim and quickly became the best-selling game in the franchise.

Why Xenoblade Chronicles X On Switch Should Happen

Xenoblade Chronicles X Mechs

Earlier this year, the original Xenoblade Chronicles was re-released as a Definitive Edition for Switch and included a brand new epilogue, Future Connected. The game sold very well, racking up almost 1.5 million units sold in about 30 days, and further proved that the series is thriving now more than ever.

Even more recently, Nintendo announced Pikmin 3 Deluxe, an updated version of the Wii U title that will release on the Switch this October. It joins the roster of other Wii U games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that suffered poor sales due to being on the Wii U, and which are now coming to Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was a huge success on Switch, becoming the highest-selling game on the system at the time. With all of the Wii U’s best games coming to Switch, Xenoblade Chronicles X is one of the few IPs still relegated to being a Wii U exclusive.

Both Monolith Soft and Nintendo have been silent or simply dismissive about releasing XCX on Switch. However, this was before the success of the latest Xenoblade Chronicles game and before the Pikmin 3 Deluxe announcement. Now, it seems apparent that XCX should come to the Switch where it could thrive. The timing couldn’t be better for Xenoblade Chronicles X to finally get some of the love and attention it deserves
