Netflix sensation Squid Game has taken the internet by storm with even the official Xbox Twitter account joining in on the memes. The Korean drama's battle royale-like premise has made it a solid hit with gamers, with recreations already happening in an Animal Crossing Squid Game remake, as well as in titles like The Sims 4.

Squid Game released on Netflix in September and has quickly become one of the biggest hits the streaming service has ever seen. The show follows financially struggling people given the opportunity to win a cash prize by competing in six children's games. Players soon discover they're fighting not just for money, but also for their lives, with each game killing off the contestants who fail to beat it. The success of Squid Game has spawned lots of memes within the gaming community, in part thanks to the show's use of circle, triangle, and square symbols similar to the symbols of a PlayStation controller.

Not one to miss out on an opportunity for memes, the official Xbox Twitter account has parodied fan comparisons between Squid Game and PlayStation by replacing the guard squadron with its own version. While the show's guards and overseers wear red jumpsuits and black masks bearing the different Sony-like symbols, Xbox has revamped the look to suit the Xbox brand. The meme dresses the guards in green, replacing the mask markings with the ABXY and Xbox symbols of the Microsoft controller. The account cheekily captioned the image: "There's always season 2..."

The Xbox meme has been a hit with fans of the show, reaching close to 50,000 likes at the time of writing. Unfortunately for Xbox gamers, if Squid Game season two does happen, it probably won't reference the hilarious gaming meme. The show's use of symbols similar to the PlayStation's triangle, circle, X, and square buttons may be popular with Sony fans and meme artists, but isn't an official affiliation. The success of the Netflix show makes a sequel series likely, though nothing has yet been confirmed by the streaming giant.

The competitive and ruthless challenges shown in Squid Game have drawn countless comparisons to video game battle royales, something which likely hasn't gone unnoticed by Netflix. The streaming platform is reportedly moving into the world of gaming, which could mean a Squid Game video game is possible in the future. Netflix recently acquired its first gaming studio, Night School Studio, best known as the developer of Oxenfree. What exactly Netflix's gaming plans are is unclear at this stage, but it's possible the company could want to create titles to tie in with its biggest original shows and movies.
