Microsoft has sent out a wave of next-gen Xbox consoles to content creators to give a first look at the outward appearances of the Xbox Series X|S, and unboxers have been quick to give a side-by-side comparison to other consoles. So far, the Xbox Series X|S has been stacked next to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One X, and now it has been compared to the size of a Super Nintendo.

Popular YouTuber Unbox Therapy was among the first to showcase the appearance and size of both next-gen Xbox consoles. In his video, he showed that the Xbox Series S is less than half the size of the Series X and is nearly half the size of the PlayStation 4 Pro. The Series S is a much smaller console than modern-day gamers are used to. Lew jokingly measured the Series S using an Xbox One controller and recorded that the console is two controllers wide and one controller deep.

The comparisons have gotten even more ridiculous when the Twitter account for the Xbox News Reddit posted a photo of the Xbox Series S next to a Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The SNES is 10 inches long and eight inches wide, and the Xbox Series S looks fairly similar in size. While the Xbox does beat the SNES in length, the Super Nintendo is a bit wider. The Xbox Series S is the smallest console to be released by Microsoft even beating the original Xbox from 2001.

Consoles are seemingly smaller the farther back in time they were released. Around the time of the Super Nintendo, consoles were relatively the same size and shape but have grown exponentially since then. Both of the latest current-gen consoles are much larger than consoles from the 90s and the Xbox Series S. The Xbox One X is 11.8 x 9.4 inches, and the PlayStation 4 Pro is 12.8 x 11.6 inches. While the Xbox Series S measures up to be 10.8 x 5.9 inches. While the Xbox Series X is a bit larger than the Series S, it is nowhere near the behemoth the PlayStation 5 is gearing up to be.

It would be nice if all consoles could find their way back to a time when they weren't the size of an early 2000s VHS player. The Nintendo Switch, for example, has a rather small footprint in an entertainment system allowing for more than one console on a shelf. It's understandable that better computing power requires more space for airflow and components, but the Xbox Series S proves that a next-gen experience can fit in a small package. Whether the tiny console delivers on Microsoft's promises... well, fans will have to wait to find out.
