Following today's news that PlayStation's new subscription service wouldn't have day-one access to exclusivesXbox has clapped back in the best way possible. PlayStation's endeavors in the subscription service arena have yet to reach the level of success as Xbox Game Pass, which has arguably been one of the most defining aspects of the Xbox brand over the past few years.

PlayStation Plus is moving to a multi-tier model and merging with PlayStation Now, which many see as an obvious response to Xbox's efforts with Game Pass. PS Plus has offered subscribers a good amount of perks, including multiplayer access, free monthly games, and the PlayStation Plus Collection, which is a consistent, small library of popular and free games. PS Now is a separate service that allows players to download or stream a selection of new and classic titles. Just today, PlayStation announced that these two services would become one, exciting many gamers. However, PlayStation head Jim Ryan noted that, even on the highest tier of the subscription model, subscribers would not be able to access first-party exclusives on day one, which stands in stark contrast to how Microsoft positions Game Pass.

Many in the gaming industry were quick to take note of this discrepancy, including Microsoft itself. The Xbox Game Pass Twitter account recently posted a tongue-in-cheek response to Ryan's announcement that PS Plus wouldn't give gamers day-one access to games. The tweet lists some of the perks of Game Pass, kicking things off with a reminder that subscribers can access new games right at launch. This point is repeated in a GIF accompanying the Tweet, making it clear that this is the focal point of the message.

While PlayStation has consistently outperformed Xbox when it comes to services like Xbox Games with Gold, most would agree that Game Pass massively outshines PS Plus and PS Now. While both of Sony's subscription services are respectable in their own right, the quantity and quality of Game Pass content for the price has landed much better with gamers. Day-one access to hotly anticipated games is a huge plus for Xbox, so it was unlikely that the company wouldn't respond to the fact that PlayStation will not be competitive in this regard.

In his statement about PS Plus not offering day-one access to games, Jim Ryan explained that this decision was made to save the company money that could then be invested into its bevy of well-received exclusive games. While that could very well be the case, it nonetheless makes this new PS Plus service less appealing than Game Pass. Time will tell how PlayStation positions this service in its overall strategy in comparison to Xbox with Game Pass.
