With most modern day gaming PC, users are no longer restricted to solely using a mouse and a keyboard when they play. In fact, the majority of current and next-gen consoles feature controllers that can be easily hooked up to any PC. While there are plenty of PC specific controllers out on the market, the Xbox One's and PlayStation 4's controllers are the biggest competitors when it comes to PC compatibility. Both accessories bring unique features to PC gaming that keyboards alone cannot deliver so which of them is actually worth the price tag?

Controller preference comes down to the games that users play, the style and feel of the controller, and how well it can incorporate with a given PC. In the physical aspect, it is difficult to determine which controller is best. However, looking at the Xbox One and PS4 controllers through a technical lens reveals the advantages and disadvantages of both accessories.

Straight out of its packaging, the Xbox One controller works phenomenally. It is compatible with the largest assortment of PC titles out on the market without the need for additional third-party software to function. The controller was built by Microsoft to run smoothly with Windows-running systems. In turn, there is little that can parallel the Xbox One controller's capabilities. Plus, newer models of the controller feature wireless Bluetooth connection which means no additional hardware needs to be purchased for Bluetooth compatible PCs. Unfortunately, older controller models do require an adapter for wireless connection. Xbox One controllers also require AA batteries which can be drained quite quickly. However, players do have the option to purchase rechargeable batteries as an alternative.

Xbox One VS PlayStation 4: Which Controller Is Right For You?

Xbox One PS4 and PlayStation 4 Controller

The PS4's DualShock 4 has several advantages over the Xbox One controller. Unlike the Xbox One controller which only features Bluetooth in its newer models, all PS4 controllers come equipped with this feature. This means there is absolutely no need for additional hardware material for the controller to connect to a PC. Plus, the DualShock 4 is a rechargeable controller by default and can easily be charged up via a Micro USB cable. Featuring a built-in trackpad, the controller can be used as a makeshift mouse should a physical one not be accessible. Unfortunately, the PS4 controller does suffer with connecting to most Windows PCs as there are no official Sony drivers available. Users will need to install third-party software in order to get the controller to function properly. Since most PC games incorporate Xbox controller layouts by default, it's not uncommon for button prompts to conflict with the DualShock 4's button layout.

Retailing at $60 USD, both controllers cost approximately the same amount when purchased brand new. However, Xbox does sell a premium version of their Xbox One controller known as the Xbox One Elite Series 2. This controller costs a staggering $180 USD, but features a lot of hardware and software customization options not seen in the standard Xbox One controller. As far as premium grade gaming controllers go, the Xbox One Elite is a player's best option.

Considering the features the Xbox One and PS4 controllers offer, there is not much that separates the two. For a smoother, easier integration, Xbox One controllers are far better than their PS4 counterpart when it comes to Windows PCs. They're much more compatible with PCs than the DualShock 4, even if they might require the purchase of additional hardware (most of which is optional). Ultimately, the shape, weight, and size of the controllers is critical for a comfortable gaming experience. Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have fantastic controllers, it's ultimately up to the user to determine which is best for their play style.
