Throughout its history, the Xbox console has brought some incredible video games with the likes of the Halo and Gears Of War franchise all wowing gamers. However, while there have been some fantastic games, there have also been some that haven't ended up taking place at all, despite the fact that they were originally advertised and expected.

There's plenty of reasons why a video game can be canceled, and that has happened plenty of times, whether it be the original Xbox, the Xbox 360, or the Xbox One. Sometimes it has left some major disappointment amongst gamers, who had high hopes for certain games, with these being great examples of that.

The Avengers

Anytime a video game is expected to be released featuring major characters such as these Marvel ones, there is going to be a lot of hope and excitement. That was the case with The Avengers game that was going to be released around the same time as the movie in order to capitalize on the popularity that it had.

While the game was going to tell a totally different story, it's obvious that had it been released, it would've been very popular. THQ got the rights to the characters, but when financial problems took place for the company, this game ended up failing to see the light of day.

Epic Mickey

Epic Mickey was exactly the same as The Avengers game, in that this had huge franchise names known around the world, and telling a new and unique story with Mickey Mouse was always going to be a hit. This was meant to be part of the Xbox 360 lineup, however, Nintendo ended up winning out on this war.

The game was set for the Xbox and the PlayStation 3, yet the decision was made to go with the brand new Nintendo Wii, with the other versions being totally dropped in order to make it a Wii exclusive.

Because the previous installment was received so poorly, the decision was made to hold back for a year, with WWE 2K21 being canceled. Instead, an arcade-style video game, WWE 2K Battlegrounds was pushed out to give fans something to play while work began on the next official WWE 2K video game.

Scalebound

Scalebound was a game that had huge excitement surrounding it and had been heavily hyped up from 2013 all the way until it was finally pulled in 2017. Because there was such a long period of time, the build-up for this game had got serious, with the monster hunting style game being something everyone had high hopes for.

The game would have seen players take control of a character who had its own dragon, who would follow demands and would help in battles. The game would have been a big hit, however, things fell apart on both sides of the deal and the game never came to be.

Phantom Dust

This video game had been officially announced at the 2014 E3 event, with a trailer being shown and the interest was immediate. The original game was a hit on the Xbox, and because of that, fans were excited about the idea of playing a new part of the story with more advanced technology.

Sadly, Microsoft and Darkside got into a disagreement, and rather than a major sequel, fans had to settle for a remastered version of the original in 2017. While that was certainly fun, it was nowhere near as good as what had been expected.

Justice League Arcade

A great Justice League video game had the potential to be very popular, bringing some of the biggest characters of all time together for one fun adventure. The game would have allowed players to take control of different characters within the group who all had their own fighting style and special abilities, as is expected.

It was set to release alongside the planned movie by George Miller, which never saw the light of day. Because the movie was never created, the potential of the game washed away as well, despite the fact there's a large comic book audience that would likely have relished playing this one.

Call Of Duty: Devil's Brigade

The idea of a Call Of Duty game being canceled seems impossible due to how popular the franchise is, yet that is exactly what happened with Call Of Duty: Devil's Brigade. The game was set to be focused on World War II and was created in case the modern-era games didn't prove to be popular.

Sadly for this game, they did, which sent the franchise in a totally different direction, with the merger between Blizzard and Vivendi also playing a factor in this game never seeing the light of day, despite the fact COD fans would have loved to play it.

Star Wars 1313

The timing of the game's creation coincided with the Walt Disney Company buying LucasArts, which led to a lot of staff losing their jobs. In the end, Disney opted to not renew the trademark on the game and the idea was abandoned despite it having a lot of promise.

GoldenEye 007

The N64 video game, GoldenEye 007 is widely considered to be one of the best video games of all time, with this shooter being a very popular game that has always had a buzz around it. At one point, a full remaster for the Xbox 360 was heavily rumored, but sadly it ended up being pulled, with only footage on YouTube being available for fans.

Because the game is so beloved, there was real excitement around an HD version of the game being released. However, in the end, copyright issues brought a stop to it from ever happening, which was certainly disappointing for most gamers.

Fable Legends

Fable Legends had all the promise of being a very exciting and enjoyable game. It would have allowed gamers to be either hero or a villain, which really pushed creativity, especially since the game could have been played online with a huge multiplayer mode.

While it was possible for some of the slots to be filled via an AI, the big idea behind this was to have various players online working together. However, Microsoft ended up canceling this, while Lionhead Studios also ended up closing down as well.
