Everyone loves free games, right? If you're a subscriber to Xbox Live Gold, then you're in for a treat this month. One of July's darlings makes a thematic comeback in the Xbox Games With Gold August roster, along with some big-ticket items that should whet the appetite of series fans for upcoming titles. This is definitely a line-up that you don't want to miss.
July's Xbox Games With Gold selection brought the likes of INSIDE, and Big Crown: Showdown to the libraries of Xbox One users. Both were potentially a little too niche to find much acclaim upon their original releases, but those looking for either a dreadfully delightful single-player horror romp or a party game were served incredibly well by last month's offerings. One title which is also going to look a little familiar when subscribers crack open the Xbox Games With Gold August selection will be Castlevania: Symphony of the Night; those who loved the Metroidvania will have a good time this month too.
The Xbox Games With Gold August line-up draws from well-known franchises like Forza, and the full schedule looks a little like this:
- Gears of War 4: Available August 1 to 31
- Forza Motorsport 6: Available August 16 to September 15
- Torchlight: Available from August 1 to August 15
- Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Available from August 16 to August 31
Those who have Castlevania fever will be pleased to note the return of yet another series favorite, Lords of Shadow in this Xbox Games With Gold August roster. With Gears 5 getting ready for its big debut on September 10, now is the prime time for Xbox to be offering its predecessor, Gears of War 4, for all newcomers who want to cut their teeth on something to get a feel for what to expect.
On the other end of the spectrum, whose wholly unconcerned with wheeling and dealing on the battlefield will be able to satiate a need for speed with Forza Motorsport 6. After having received a number of acclaimed expansions, this particular addition to the Forza stable should have plenty to keep Xbox Gold subscribers happy this month. Last but not least, Torchlight has been an oft-suggested alternative to those jonesing for the loot fest that is Diablo. The original being offered here is definitely as good a way as any to ease into the franchise.
Compared to the indie offerings of July, the Xbox Games With Gold August group is stacked with a number of heavy-hitting titles that should give subscribers a little more bang for their buck. While Gears of War 4 is clearly there as a primer to get people excited about the latest entry in that particular series, the other curated selections are just good, old-fashioned fun on their own. Those wanting a Castlevania experience similar to last month's might want to give Lords of Shadow a wider berth, but overall the offerings this month should be more than satisfying.
