Xbox is kicking off its Games with Gold offerings for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S in the new year with a few creepy headliners including Little Nightmares and Dead Rising. Making use of the console's backward compatibility, the service is also bringing games like The King of Fighters XIII and Breakdown to players in January. The Games with Gold feature on the Xbox is one benefit of picking up either Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the console’s subscription services. Games with Gold allows members limited-time access to various free games which are revealed monthly.

Little Nightmares is a timely offering for the platform as the game’s sequel, Little Nightmares 2, is expected to release in February 2021. That is just one month after Xbox’s program makes the game available for fans who may not have experienced the original game. Interest in the title may also have risen recently due to The Game Awards, which aired earlier this month. In addition to the on-stage production, the awards show, hosted and produced by Geoff Keighley, offered fans a chance to get hands-on with upcoming titles for free in its game festival. This included a first look at Tarsier Studios’ anticipated follow up, Little Nightmares 2.

As the year approaches its end, Xbox has announced its first Games with Gold offerings for 2021. Starting off the month, Little Nightmares and The King of Fighters XIII are available beginning January 1. The puzzle-platformer Little Nightmares follows the character Six attempting to survive aboard the worst cruise ever and will be on Xbox’s service until January 31. Though The King of Fighters XIII becomes available at the same time as its nightmare-inducing counterpart, the arcade classic will only be up for grabs until January 15.

In the second half of January 2021, members of either Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Games Pass Ultimate can check out both Dead Rising and Breakdown for free. The service is offering the remastered version of photojournalist Frank West’s bloody fight against a ranging horde of zombies in Dead Rising, which will be available from January 16 through February 15. Getting slightly less time on the service, Breakdown, a suspenseful action title which sees Derrick Cole battle out of a mysterious lab using newfound powers, will be available on Games with Gold from January 16 to January 31.

While it is exciting that Little Nightmares and Dead Rising are coming to the service soon, be sure to check out this month’s Games with Gold titles before they are gone. Xbox players still have until the end of December to pick up The Raven and Stacking.
