The Xbox Games with Gold titles for August 2021 have been revealed and they're a massive step up in quality from previous months, as the lineup includes games like Darksiders 3 and Yooka-Laylee. Xbox Live Gold is required for online multiplayer in premium Xbox games, and like competing services, it offers free monthly games for subscribers.

The Xbox Games with Gold titles throughout 2021 have been dismal, to the point where fans have wondered why the service continues, instead of just being rolled into Xbox Game Pass. The highlight of July 2021's games was a Conker title from the original Xbox, while June's highlight was the Xbox 360 version of the original InjusticeThese games are much less impressive than the titles given out on PlayStation Plus, with new Xbox Game Pass games outshining Games With Gold's offerings month after month.

It seems that Microsoft has stepped up in August, offering a selection of games that most people have actually heard of. Xbox has revealed that Darksiders 3, Yooka-Laylee, Lost Planet 3, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves will be available to subscribers in August. These games can be claimed by Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Darksiders 3 can be claimed from August 1-31, Yooka-Laylee can be claimed from August 16-September 15, Lost Planet 3 can be claimed from August 1-15, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves can be claimed from August 16-31.

Darksiders 3 is a hack and slash game that stars one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as she carves through hordes of enemies in her quest to slay the Seven Deadly Sins. Yooka-Laylee is a 3D platformer that was developed by former Rare employees and is considered to be a spiritual successor to the collection-based platformers on the Nintendo 64, like Banjo-KazooieLost Planet 3 is a third-person action-adventure game from the Xbox 360, where the player must survive on a frozen planet. Finally, Garou: Mark of the Wolves is a fighting game that is part of the Fatal Fury series.

The Xbox Games with Gold for August contain some refreshingly decent games, and they're a marked improvement from what subscribers have gotten in previous months. It's unclear what the future holds for the service, especially when Microsoft is giving away its first-party offerings on Game Pass as they launch However, months like this prove that there's still some life left in Xbox Live Gold and that it's not always outdone by PlayStation Plus.
