A new feature is being rolled out to select Xbox Series X|S games called FPS Boost. As the name implies, it will allow players to experience these titles in almost double the framerate. The feature is free to all Xbox Series X|S owners via the latest system update.

Framerate refers to the number of individual images, or frames, on-screen for a certain amount of time. When these frames are played back quickly, it gives the image movement. The gaming industry-standard in framerate has been 60 FPS, as this provides a crystal-clear and responsive image. Games that run at 60 FPS are considered to be among the best in visual quality, though some games on PC can run at even higher FPS rates than that.

Originally revealed in February 2021, the Xbox FPS Boost pushes games to run at an even higher framerate, resulting in a more immersive experience, according to Major Nelson. Older titles getting the upgrade included Skyrim and New Super Lucky's Tale. The Xbox team has worked with the developers directly on games getting upgraded to ensure that FPS Boost would "enhance the experience while maintaining the game's original intent."

Now, more games from EA are receiving this same treatment. These games include entries in the Battlefield series, Plants Vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Garden Warfare, and Mirror's Edge Catalyst. Over half of the titles on the current list are available through the Xbox Game Pass, either with the standard package or the Ultimate edition. More titles, including ones from other publishers, are expected to be added in the future.

Not all games will automatically receive the FPS Boost upgrade, however. In certain cases, the change in framerate adjusts the graphics requirements, resulting in a lower resolution. In these cases, FPS Boost is not enabled by default. However, the setting can be toggled on or off under the Compatibility Options menu. Some hardware might also be unable to run 120hz gameplay, especially on the Xbox Series X. Players are encouraged to check their individual setup's limitations and adjust their experience accordingly.

FPS Boost has already proven itself to Xbox players, with many players expressing excitement at the announcement. Being able to bring games from previous generations more align graphically with their modern counterparts is remarkable. Requests are already rolling in for the next wave of games to get the treatment, ranging from Sunset Overdrive to Gears of War. Only time will tell which games will join the FPS Boost library, but its steady growth shows the project has plenty of potential.
