Taron Egerton denies rumors that he will play Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For well over a year now, fans have been flooding the internet with art depicting the Rocketman star as the ageless mutant and member of the X-Men. Egerton is one of several actors whose name has been floated as a potential replacement for Hugh Jackman, but the Kingsman actor has consistently insisted that he has not been approached.

In 2019, Disney bought 20th Century Fox, who owned the film rights to Wolverine and the X-Men. Since then, Marvel Studios, also owned by Disney, has likely been on how to incorporate the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has announced the X-Men will join the MCU, he has been vague on details regarding the new iteration of the team. Without any further developments, fans have been left to speculate on who could fill the role of Wolverine.

Speaking with GQ about his upcoming film Tetris, Egerton explained that there is no truth to the rumors regarding him playing Wolverine. Egerton did express his gratitude however, saying, “That anyone thinks I would be good for the part is really flattering. I love Marvel, but it’s just fan stuff. There is no grounding for those rumours.

Taron Egerton in Kingsman The Golden Circle

Hugh Jackman completed his tenure as the mutant Logan (AKA Wolverine) in James Manigold's critical and commercial success Logan, after nine films spanning seventeen years. While Jackman was praised for his role as Wolverine, Egerton could be a good replacement. Much like Jackman, Egerton also began in theater, appearing in musicals Oliver! and Beauty and the Beast. He also won a Golden Globe for playing Elton John in the biopic Rocketman last year, which proves that he has what it takes to pull off an iconic character like Wolverine.

While Jackman was beloved as Wolverine, it's incredibly likely that Marvel will still try to recast him. The character has been one of Marvel's most iconic and enduring properties since premiering in The Incredible Hulk #180 in 1974. Many fans would support Egerton playing Wolverine, and Jackman would also likely give his seal of approval given their past working relationship. Fans will continue to speculate on who could play the character, but Marvel needs to make the character stand out from Jackman's iconic take. The role may not go to Egerton, but the buzz around the character's casting indicates that fans are eager to see the mutants in the MCU.
