Warning: contains spoilers for S.W.O.R.D #8!

A literal goddess in human (or mutant) form, the X-Men's Storm recently became the regent of Mars and the voice of the entire solar system, using the occasion of her ascension to reveal her "true face" and badass ultimate form. A longtime member of the X-Men, Storm recently left the island nation of Krakoa after opting out of mutantkind's new resurrection process, resolving to live just one life, but to live it to the best of her abilities.

In S.W.O.R.D #8 by Al Ewing and Guiu Vilanova, Storm is the newly appointed ruler of Arakko (a renamed Mars) and upholder of the Seat of-All-Around-Us. Holding the fifth seat of the Great Ring, Storm acts as a consultant upon the land, people, and weather. This seat grants her an additional vote on the council and the title of Regent - a position that's even more impressive now that the X-Men have declared Arakko the capital of the Sol System, currying interplanetary favor by using the magic metal mysterium to stabilize the galactic economy. Understanding her role as Regent and Voice of Sol, Storm vows that despite her outsider status, this new planet will not see her break... at least for now. As she faces new challenges brought on by the mutant people of Arakko and the Nine Seats, Ororo continues to prove herself worthy of her new titles.

After defeating Calderak - a mutant who wishes to unseat her from the Great Ring - Ororo challenges Tarn the Uncaring to a duel for dishonoring his promise and attacking Krakoa. Her fellow ruler accepts and, just as the match starts, uses his DNA-altering power to strip Storm of her mutant abilities and transform the X-Man's body. Unyielding, Storm showcases her excellent strategy and combat skill by piercing Tarn with a blade near his heart, resulting in his surrender. In regaining her powers and original form, Storm revisits her vow as she looks to the sky and sees her "true face" in the storm clouds above.

X-Men Storm

The moment recontextualizes Storm's earlier comments that she will not break for Arakko, making it clear that she's using the term as it refers to weather, and that she understands she will need to be unrelenting to win the planet's respect - only then can the storm break. It's unclear how much of this final page is metaphor - Storm's powers are such that she probably could sculpt the storm clouds above her - but the face that looks down is Ororo's '80s self, characterized by her leather jacket and mohawk hair. That Storm considers this her true face shows that while she may play the role of a regent, deep down she's still the self-possessed badass who took on this now famous look.

Storm's mohawk first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #173, where the hero debuted her new punk-rock look to her shocked X-Men family. A symbol of regained strength and confidence in her newfound self after healing from past traumas, Storm's new look sparked a change that eventually brought her to challenge an unfocused Cyclops for his position as the leader of the X-MenOroro was no stranger to leadership roles, as she previously became the new leader of the Morlocks in #170 after stabbing Callisto in the heart in their one-on-one knife fight. This marked the beginning of Storm's future mohawk look, and Nightcrawler was the first to notice Storm's change before she left the X-Men towards the end of the issue.

Ororo's journey of self discovery led her to new relationships outside the X-Men, and to take her place as a leader. Storm's mohawk look shows up frequently throughout X-Men comics as it represents the character's independence and self-possessed leadership, so it's no wonder the Regent of Arakko also sees it as her true form, merged with crackling thunder clouds to denote her political and mutant might.
