Warning: contains a preview of Sabretooth #3!

The longtime leader of the X-Men, the telepathic Professor X, continues to prove he is the most toxic leader in all of Marvel Comics in a preview for the upcoming Sabretooth #3. While it seemed like Charles might actually decided to take accountability and step down from the Quiet Council after the disastrous events of Inferno, the mutants have had no such luck, and Xavier continues to spread his toxicity throughout the island nation of Krakoa.

While casual fans might think Professor X has always been the leader of the X-Men, this is not true, as he has been replaced by people like Storm, Magneto, Kate Pryde, Wolverine, and Cyclops throughout the X-Men's publication history, and most of them have led the mutants way better than Charles ever did. Time and time again, Xavier has shown that he can't be trusted and will do whatever it takes to succeed at his "dream," even at the cost of his own values, such as the revelation of his hidden first team in Deadly Genesis, the secrets he kept with Moira X which led to Inferno, and his extremely sketchy return from the dead by taking over Fantomex's body.

As Kate Pryde once famously said, "Professor Xavier is a jerk!" but sadly, his shortcomings fall way beyond the level of just being a jerk, and truly cement him as the most toxic and egotistical leader in X-Men history. A new preview for Sabretooth #3 - written by Victor Lavalle with art by Leonard Kirk and Rain Beredo - reveals how the young mutant Melter, formerly of the Young Masters, was thrown into the Pit on Krakoa. While Xavier and Magneto promised Cypher and Krakoa that there would not be any jails on the island, they effectively lied and had Krakoa create "The Pit," a stasis-like pocket of the island where mutants who break one of the three laws of Krakoa are placed for an indefinite sentence. This act alone is enough to cement Charles as a power-mad tyrannical leader, but it's how he acts with the young Christopher Colchiss that really shows just how ruthless Xavier truly is. By Xavier's decree, Christopher has broken the second law of Krakoa, "Respect This Sacred Land," by practicing his powers on the island, and Charles admonishes him with a Bible quote, implying Xavier and the Council are God. Enjoy the preview from Marvel Comics below:

Melter is a complex character who has an ability that inherently makes him dangerous to all living things. In a flashback in the Sabretooth #3 preview, Melter can be seen trying to practice with his powers and inadvertently destroying a large piece of Krakoan land, which then led to Krakoa draining the lifeforce of a handful of mutants as it attempted to heal. Using his telepathy to assess Melter's motives - something he has claimed in the past he wouldn't do without permission - Professor X concludes that he was attempting to spy on the Quiet Council out of a personal desire for importance, admonishing him by saying, "But the fruit of that particular knowledge is forbidden to you," referencing Melter attempting to gain access to the Quiet Council's inner chambers.

By using this particular Biblical reference, Charles is positioning himself as a God-like figure, referencing the Garden of Eden, and following this with a trip to the mutant equivalent of Hell once Melter repeats the attempt. Of course, Melter shouldn't be harming Krakoa in this way, especially doing it again after realizing that this would endanger other mutants, but the fact that Xavier is so confident in framing himself as a God-like benevolent figure is incredibly toxic and alarming.

Professor X should probably have stepped down from the X-Men's Quiet Council after Emma Frost so definitively proved she is Krakoa's rightful leader, revealing how terribly Xavier handled Inferno, but he still persists in the pages of Sabretooth as a megalomaniac whose judgment can spell doom for anyone who crosses him.
