Jean Grey, who is set to return to the Marvel Universe later this year, is getting her own team in the upcoming comic book series, X-Men: Red. The series was announced last week, though without any details of who will be on the team. Marvel has now announced the full roster for the "Red" team, which is set to include three A-list heroes, two lesser-known characters, and one all-new character.
As part of Marvel Legacy, a relaunch intended to restore various classic characters to the status quo, Marvel announced in September that Jean Grey, who died in 2004, would be resurrected. After a 13-year absence, the Omega-level mutant is set to make her long-awaited return in December in the five-part miniseries, Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey.
Marvel has released a variant cover for its first issue of X-Men: Red, which features Jean Grey and her entire team in their new costumes. The cover reveals that Jean's team will be joined by Nightcrawler, Namor the Sub-Mariner, X-23 as the new Wolverine, her sister Gabby, Gentle, and a new character called Trinary.
The inclusion of Nightcrawler could come as a surprise to fans who know that the mutant is currently serving on the "Gold" team, led by Kitty Pryde. Namor, on the other hand, has been associated with the X-Men for over a decade now, but hasn't been active with the X-Men for a while. The most interesting inclusions are Gabby and Gentle, who are not as well-known as the others. Gabby, like X-23, is a female clone of Wolverine. In terms of their abilities, the main differences between her and her sister is that Gabby has one claw on each hand and is unable to feel pain. Gentle is a mutant from Wakanda who can control his own muscle mass.
The "Red" team, described by Marvel as a "uniquely qualified strike force," will eventually be joined by yet another mutant, according to X-Men group editor Marc Paniccia:
As the threat level escalates, Jean needs to build a highly specialized team…not just those she trusts, but allies who can survive the oncoming storm.
What's most surprising about the mutants on Jean's new team is that only one of them appears to fit the criteria she's looking for. Of all of them, Nightcrawler is the only one that Jean has worked with for years. Most of the characters are fairly new and weren't around when Jean was alive. As for Namor, the character has a reputation for being Marvel's first superhero, but has yet to develop a meaningful connection to Jean Grey due to the fact that Namor didn't become a member of the X-Men until 2011.
X-Men: Red will launch in February of 2018.
