Just because Deadpool is practically immortal, doesn’t mean he’s impervious to losing battles–and one shocking X-Men hero reminds him of that with one brutal move.

Wade Wilson became the unkillable Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool, after he volunteered for experimental cancer treatment under false pretenses. Secretly, the medical program Wilson joined was Weapon X, and while the program stayed true to its word and cured Wade of his cancer, Weapon X also turned him into a mutated soldier it hoped to control–a process that mutilated Wade, in both mind and body. The good news (depending on one’s point of view) is that Wade effectively became immortal as he gained the power to heal from any wound no matter how serious, while also getting heightened senses and abilities that make him a formidable foe. Basically, even if an enemy could inflict Deadpool with a fatal wound, that still wouldn’t be enough to kill him–though one X-Man certainly came the closest to putting him down for good.

Nightcrawler Decapitated Deadpool with His Teleportation Power

Nightcrawler beats Deadpool.

In X-Calibre #3 by Warren Ellis and Ken Lashley, readers are thrown into the alternate timeline of the Age of Apocalypse where every character has the same powers as their Earth-616 counterparts (given that AoA is a splintered timeline, not an original universe) while existing in a dramatically altered world. In this issue, two of Apocalypse’s most deadly soldiers–Damask and Dead Man Wade–track Nightcrawler and Mystique to the mutant/human safe haven of Avalon. Once they got there, Damask was taken aback by how beautiful and peaceful this place was, and she decided to turn against Apocalypse in pursuit of restoring this level of beauty to the rest of the world. Dead Man Wade, however, absolutely despises life in every regard, so the flourishing and lush gardens of Avalon made Wade furious–inspiring him to burn the entire place to the ground. However, before he inflicted too much damage, Nightcrawler teleports behind Wade, grabs his head, and then teleports away with it, only to return moments later without Wade’s head in his hands.

Given that Dead Man Wade has the same powers as Deadpool, his fate could presumably have been shared by his Earth-616 counterpart–but more importantly, that brutal move used by Nightcrawler is something he can do whenever he wants. It is known that Nightcrawler can teleport with someone so long as he is touching them, but this issue shows that Nightcrawler can isolate certain parts of people’s bodies and teleport entire limbs away. This exhibition of power goes far beyond just being able to defeat the unkillable Deadpool in a single move, but also implies that Nightcrawler can beat practically anyone in a second.

While Dead Man Wade survived this attack (just as the original Deadpool would) he was certainly down for the count as Dead Man Wade didn’t make another appearance for the rest of the original Age of Apocalypse series following this issue, and his survival was only revealed upon a return to this universe years later–proving that Nightcrawler, perhaps the least likely X-Men hero to do something this brutal, can beat Deadpool with one move (no matter the timeline).
