After a disappointing end to the first X-Men trilogy, Fox decided to (soft) reboot the franchise by going back in time to tell the stories of the main X-Men from the first movies, from when they were younger. Most fans would seem to agree that Michael Fassbender playing a young Magneto has been one of the best things to come out of the resulting second X-Men trilogy.
Fassbender has so far made three appearances as Magneto, in X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and most recently in X-Men: Apocalypse. However, this means that his original contract for the franchise has now been fulfilled, leaving his potential return to the X-Men films in doubt. It seems Fassbender is just as unsure as everybody else, with regard to whether or not there are any X-Men movies left in his future, at this stage.
Fassbender was a guest on The Empire Film Podcast to discuss his most recent endeavor, Assassin's Creed. He was then asked if he would return to the X-Men movies in the future or if his days as Magneto are done. If Fassbender already knows the answer to that question, then he didn't let on in his response:
I don’t know to be honest. I haven’t made any sort of decision on it because I have no idea what’s happening next with the franchise to be honest.
While Fassbender has continued to do strong work as Magneto, the X-Men movies arguably continue to tell the same story over and over again with the character - where he and Professor X are on opposing sides, eventually come to terms, and then go their separate ways once more. It appears as though the X-Men films would benefit from including some other morally-ambiguous mutant characters for a while, instead.
Fox may have had plans for Fassbender to continue playing Magneto at one point, but after Apocalypse's disappointing run and reception, that situation may have changed. Recent reports have suggested that Fox intends to bring back Fassbender for a fourth X-Men movie, so this could also just be him playing coy about a deal because the details are still being finalized.
Should Fox still have a plan to use Magneto then one hopes the studio has already locked down Fassbender to return to the role. With New Mutants and the Deadpool movies taking center stage right now though, it's perhaps more likely than not that the X-Men franchise is moving on without him. Time will tell, in that respect.
