WARNING: Spoilers for Inferno #3 ahead!

The recently formed mutant nation of Krakoa has upended the geopolitical world of Marvel's entire galaxy in major ways since its founding, but almost none of this would be possible without the X-Men member Cypher, who is able to communicate with the island of Krakoa itself. The burgeoning era of Krakoan biotechnology has been shown in many ways, particularly with the inventions of the mutant creator Forge, but in Inferno #3, Cypher finally explains how one of Krakoa's most powerful technological advancements - Gateways - were created.

It was established way back in House of X/Powers of X that after Xavier, Magneto, and Moira McTaggert decided on their plan to make Krakoa the base of their new mutant nation, Professor X sent Doug Ramsey to the island months before making it public so that he could terraform it to be suitable for mutant habitation. Cypher's mutant ability is Omnilingual Translation, meaning he is able to translate, understand, and communicate in any written or spoken language, either alien or terrestrial, including the powerful ability to communicate with computers and technology. This power explains Cypher's close relationship with the techno-organic alien Warlock and also with the sentient island of Krakoa, with the three forming a powerful triad of friends. While it had been made clear that Doug's relationship with Krakoa is what lead to the creation of the different mutant habitats and other biotechnological advancements, it was not until Inferno #3 - illustrated by R.B. Silva, Stefano Caselli, Valerio Schiti, Adriano Di Benedetto and David Curiel and written by X-Men icon Jonathan Hickman - that Cypher explained how the Gateways are made.

The Krakoan Gateways are floral transportation gates that start with a "gateway flower," allowing Gateways to be planted and grown pretty much anywhere, including space (as long as it has some dirt).  In the issue, Cypher is seen in a flashback showing Xavier and Magneto the immense strength of Krakoa's land-building abilities by introducing them to a "habitat flower" which is used to grow homes and structures on the island before debuting the even more powerful "gateway flower." Doug explains that while Krakoa is known to feed on mutant energy, because of the large number of mutants on the island Krakoa is able to draw energy from them without harming them at all. This means Krakoa now has the extra energy to "bloom," helping to create these new flowers. Cypher is then seen talking with Beast about the gateway flowers. Here it is revealed that Doug and Krakoa grew the new species with very specific instructions. Beast apparently told Cypher to grow the gateway flowers in cadavers he supplies, insinuating that all the corpses died from the same specific (yet unrevealed) complication. Cypher, very reasonably, describes the entire process as "Super Gross."

No matter their suspect origins, these Gateways have allowed Krakoa to become the leaders of the newly formed galactic Sol System, led to their terraforming of Mars, and helped the X-Men to re-enter the superhero scene as global adventurers. Regardless of who and what the corpses were, it is now clear that the Krakoan Gateways were created through a complex combination of Beast's scientific experimentation, Cypher's communication skills, and Krakoa's telefloronic powers.

Cypher and Krakoa have been shown to have their own hidden agenda for the mutant nation, and it seems like the morbid history of the powerful gateway flowers is just one more secret Doug needs to keep. After the shocking revelation in Inferno #3 only time will tell what's next for the living island of Krakoa and its strongest ally, the powerful mutant Cypher.
