This article contains spoilers for X-Men: Inferno #2.

Professor X and Magneto have been forced to reveal their greatest secret to Emma Frost - and the future of the X-Men will rest upon her response. The mutant nation of Krakoa is built on a foundation of secrets and lies. For years, Charles Xavier and Magneto worked together in secret, guided by the knowledge of the reincarnating mutant Moira MacTaggert. Krakoa was their endgame, a last, desperate Hail Mary to prevent the destruction of mutantkind that had occurred in every previous timeline Moira had lived through.

And now everything is at risk. Jonathan Hickman and Stefano Caselli's X-Men: Inferno has seen Mystique successfully resurrect her wife Destiny, who has even ascended to a position on Krakoa's ruling Quiet Council. Precogs like Destiny are the only ones who can threaten Moira MacTaggert, and by extension everything that has been accomplished because of her knowledge. And so, in X-Men: Inferno #2, the three conspirators decide they need an ally. They choose Emma Frost.

Xavier and Magneto escort Emma to a meeting with Moira MacTaggert, and there allow Emma to read Moira's mind - to see inside all the different timelines Moira has lived through, to explore her death at the hands of Mystique and Destiny in one timeline, to understand the reason Moira fears precogs. It's yet another miscalculation from Krakoa's leaders, though, because Emma Frost is a proud and confident woman, and they have just revealed they've been manipulating her for as long as they've known her. She walks away in fury, leaving the conspirators wondering if they've just made themselves an enemy. And though she'll think over what they said about Mystique and Destiny, she won't make any commitments.

Emma Frost Moira MacTaggert X-Men

While Emma Frost may be an A-list superhero nowadays, she's still a very flawed person. Her greatest weakness is one that is common to telepaths; a deep-rooted desire for control, coupled with a superiority complex because she has always been able to dip in and out of people's minds with impunity. Now she has learned she has never had control at all; from the very day she first met Professor X she was simply a pawn, her moves predicted based upon the lifetimes Moira has lived. The revelation is a devastating one for Emma, and it leaves her furious. It's notable that, as she walks away, she reverts to her diamond form - one in which her mind cannot be read, in which she is inaccessible to Professor X.

Professor X, Magneto, and Moira MacTaggert may well have made a dangerous foe. Marvel has been hinting Emma Frost will dethrone Xavier and Magneto, including on the cover of X-Men: Inferno #2, and now she has good reason to do so. What's more, Emma is someone who values loyalty, and one of her oldest friends, Banshee - who she worked with in training Generation X - was deceived particularly badly by Moira. It's quite possible Emma Frost will decide to bring Magneto and Professor X's secrets out into the open - shaking all the X-Men.
