FOX has officially renewed X-Men TV show The Gifted for season 2. The news isn't surprising, considering that the series has been performing well in the ratings department. However, some fans were concerned for the show's future after Disney purchased 20th Century Fox for $50 billion, finally allowing Marvel Studios access to X-Men and Fantastic Four characters.

Set in the same universe as FOX's X-Men movie franchise, The Gifted shows a viewers a world where mutants must fend for themselves against the persecution of the government, but without any intervention from the X-Men. A seemingly normal family sees their lives upended when their children are revealed to be mutants. After going on the run from the authorities, Reed (Stephen Moyer) and his family must turn to the mutant underground in order to survive. Also featured in the show are three prominent X-Men comic book characters: Thunderbird (Blair Redford), Polaris (Emma Dumont), and Blink (Jamie Chung.)

The show's season 2 renewal was announced during FOX's portion of the winter TCA press tour. There's no word yet on if season 2 will be 22 episodes or shorter. Season 1, which premiered in the first week of October last year, will consist of 13 episodes total, with the final two airing together later this month.

The Gifted was expected to receive a second season order in light of how well the show has performed in the ratings. For the Fall 2017 season, the show was ranked the #3 new drama. The show averages 8.3 million viewers across all platforms and 2.0/7 in the Live +7 ratings. The show brings in solid ratings for the network, and does better than most series when factoring in those viewers that record The Gifted on their DVRs.

Fans will have to wait and see how season 2 of The Gifted continues to build on the X-Men universe. As the first season has progressed, the X-Men have been continuously name-dropped, and the season finale is expected to explore those connections in greater detail. The finale will also touch on Polaris' relationship with Magneto, who comic books fans know is the character's father.

Created by Matt Nix, The Gifted stars Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Sean Teale, Natalie Alyn Lind, Percy Hynes White, Coby Bell, Jamie Chung, Blair Redford, and Emma Dumont.
