Warning: Spoilers for X-Force #22 by Benjamin Percy, Robert Gill, and Guru-eFX ahead!

Zombies are a popular trope in the world of entertainment, but in X-Force #22 they take on a whole new, more organic form. Krakoa's X-Force probably didn't expect that their search for the mastermind behind a recent string of attacks would put them face to face with an army of undead, but unfortunately for them, facing unexpected threats is part of the job.

Since the events of Marvel's Hellfire Gala, the X-Force has had their hands full. Wolverine was sent to Madripoor to investigate the fate of the Marauder and, in turn, face a villainous arakkii pirate; the team made a trip to the coast of Washington to save a bunch of people from some chemical waste-infused sea creatures, and now they're facing a threat which infects the very air they breathe. It may seem difficult to trace the madman behind the string of plant-like, telefloronic infections, but the X-Force is up to the task. Plus, with the help of Man-Slaughter (after they recruited him from his recluse existence) they'll hopefully be fully prepped to face any threatening surprises that might pop up.

In the last issue of X-Force, a series of incidents occurred in which people were doing heinous things, forgetting what happened, and then getting blackmailed or arrested for crimes they had no control over. Sage and the X-Force determined it was some sort of telefloronic control and recruited a Man-Thing (in this case, Man-Slaughter) to help them track down who was behind it. Now, in X-Force #22, the team had Man-Slaughter combine his telefloronic powers with that of Krakoa's farther reaching connection to all of Earths flora and fauna in order to track down Dr. Bloodroot. Bloodroot is a scientist hired by Weapon Plus and created Man-Slaughter against his will. He also blames mutantkind for the death of his wife after she overdosed on their medicine and decided to use his plant technology to retaliate against them, leading to the series of unwitting civilian attacks. Luckily they're able to pinpoint his location the cemetery where his late wife is buried.

X-Force Plant Zombies

However, it's not long after they arrive at the cemetery that Dr. Bloodroot goes full plant monster on them and uses his powers to awaken an army of undead from the ground below him... including his own dead wife. The X-Force are prepared for a lot of things, but an army of telefloronically controlled plant zombies is probably not one of them. On top of being disturbing, they are also relentless as long as Dr. Bloodroot is still standing. Nevertheless, Man-Slaughter is able to bring him and his creepy cohorts down after an attempt at reasoning with him didn't work.

Hopefully Dr. Bloodroot doesn't rise from the Earth to attack again, or go back to the Weapon Plus program, but as Man-Slaughter pointed out, "plants never really die. They just go into hiding." So, it's probable that he will make his return at some point, but maybe it'll be against the man who dealt his wife the drugs next time, instead of the mutants themselves. After all, the X-Force already has enough on its plate without having to fight a never-ending army of skeletal plant zombies and mind-controlled civilians.
