Warning: spoilers ahead for X-Men Red #7The end of the X-Men's Krakoan Age - a fan-favorite, critically acclaimed reboot that began with Jonathan Hickman's 2018 takeover of the mutant franchise with House of X/Powers of X - may be here, as Marvel Comics reveals that the mutants' next major event after Sins of Sinister will be titled Fall of X.

The Krakoan Age has seen Marvel formally do away with the classic school setting for Marvel's Merry Mutants, replacing it with a mutant society surviving and thriving on the living island of Krakoa. However, Fall of X, announced by Marvel at NYCC's "Next Big Thing" panel, could also be hinting at the inevitable and long-time-coming downfall of Professor Charles Xavier, the egotistical founder of Krakoa, which could lead to an entirely new era for the X-Men.

Little has been revealed about what Fall of X will entail, only that it is set for Summer 2023, directly after the Marvel event Summer of Symbiotes with a brief synopsis stating, "The X-Men hoped Krakoa would last forever. Time to find out if they were right." It seems Fall of X will indeed be a reckoning for Krakoa as a nation, but it stops short of stating outright that it will fall. Given the way X-Men's Krakoa events have played with the meaning of 'X' - using it as a stand-in for 'ten' and the word 'cross' in the past - it's equally possible that Fall of X is referring to the fall from grace of Professor X, which could see Krakoa forming an entirely new type of government, fully relocating to Arakko, or a whole other host of major changes to the current status quo of the Krakoan Age

Charles Xavier Is Out Of Control

X-Men-Red-7-Magnetos-Warning-About-Xavier-1

Charles Xavier has been losing the trust and admiration of his peers since the events of Inferno, when it was revealed that his secret benefactor Moira X had evil intent, and the recent death of Magneto foreshadowed a major turn towards "the dark side" for the Professor. In X-Men Red #7 as Magneto lay dying, he warned Storm to keep a close watch on Charles, guessing that some day soon something would threaten the Krakoan way of life and Xavier would make the decision to martyr the mutants, bound up in the pride that comes with his righteous principles. Charles Xavier has already started to view himself as a god, and has been shown to be subtly invading and manipulating the minds of Krakoan mutants using Cerebro, so it is not a huge jump to see him becoming a villain to Krakoa because he thinks he is protecting it or the world.

Marvel timeline fall of x x-men

While Wolverine has admitted that he has always known Krakoa would end, most of the future projections seen by characters like Moira X or Destiny show that for Krakoa to be fully destroyed something truly cataclysmic would need to happen, and it would really make no sense for Marvel to return the X-Men to the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters setting when the ongoing reboot has been so well received by fans and critics alike. In contrast, this entire era has continually hinted at Professor X's potential for darkness. Charles Xavier's former students have all split away from him ideologically, politically, and practically, with Cyclops and Jean leaving his Quiet Council to found a new X-Men team, Nightcrawler creating "the Spark" to oppose Charles' broken ideology, and Doug Ramsey sabotaging the Pit because Xavier lied that there would be no prisons on Krakoa.

Marvel Comics recently revealed X-Men event Fall of X promises to put everyone's favorite mutants through hell and back. While it's possible this means the fall of Krakoa, it's far more likely that the event will chart the downfall of Professor X, but either way, the X-Men will never be the same.
