UPDATE 4: Watch the first X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer now!
We know that a trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix exists, since it screened to an audience at CineEurope this week, but when will it release for the general public? Though 20th Century Fox hasn't officially set a date, it's a pretty safe bet that we'll see the first trailer for Dark Phoenix in June or July - mostly likely alongside a tentpole like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom or Ant-Man and the Wasp, or during Fox's presentation at San Diego Comic-Con.
As the name suggests, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will focus on Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) as she grapples with the enormously powerful and potentially destructive Phoenix force inside her. The film will mark the feature directorial debut for longtime X-Men movie writer Simon Kinberg, and will be a continuation of the X-Men prequel movies - the most recent of which was X-Men: Apocalypse. Dark Phoenix was originally supposed to release this year, but has since been pushed back to February 2019.
With major comic book movies, it's standard to see the first trailer between six months to a year before the release date, and Dark Phoenix's release is now just eight months away. It was a smart move for Fox to wait for the shadow of Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 to pass over before trying to get audiences excited for another comic book movie, and Ant-Man and the Wasp could be the perfect movie to pair with a Dark Phoenix trailer. It's one of only two comic book movies still awaiting release this year (the other is Aquaman, which isn't out until November), and Dark Phoenix's reportedly somber tone could be a nice counterpoint to the more lighthearted and comedic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
If Fox wants to give Dark Phoenix a bit more fanfare, the trailer could be shown at SDCC during the studio's Hall H panel - though it's worth noting that Fox didn't showcase any X-Men movies at their Comic-Con panel last year. Optimistically, we could be getting the trailer in just a week from now, if the studio decides to pair it with the release of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Now that we know it's out there, it certainly feels like a general release should be imminent.
So, if the X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer releases alongside Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, you can expect to see it unveiled on or around June 21. If it's released alongside Ant-Man and the Wasp, we'll be getting it on or around July 5. And if Fox decides to keep the fans waiting until SDCC, we'll get our first look at Dark Phoenix on the weekend of July 20-22.
