X-Men: Dark Phoenix actor Kodi Smit-McPhee, who plays Nightcrawler, has shared behind-the-scenes photos of a comic book accurate look that some outlets are calling a new costume. However, Nightcrawler actually wore this suit briefly at the end of 2014's X-Men: Apocalypse.

Teleporting mutant Nightcrawler has served as a member of the X-Men in two films, beginning with his live-action debut in X2, when the character was played by Alan Cumming. Smit-McPhee portrayed a younger version of the character in X-Men: Apocalypse. In the movie, Nightcrawler was a mutant who was forced to fight in cage matches, but was rescued by Mystique. He joins the X-Men after the battle with Apocalypse, and cameos with other members of the team in Deadpool 2.

Smit-McPhee posted (via Universo X-Men on Twitter) photos of himself trying on a comic book accurate version of Nightcrawler's costume. The photos show a back and front view of the classic suit. While the images provide fans their best look yet at the iconic costume, the suit isn't new. It was spotted briefly at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse, when the new class of X-Men debuted their new costumes. Unlike past films, the X-Men weren't wearing matching suits, and some of the new costumes seemed to be directly inspired by the comic books. Nightcrawler's costume was clearly based on his original look, which was designed by Dave Cockrum.

Certain news outlets are reporting that the suit in the photos is Nightcrawler's new look for the upcoming film, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, though this assessment isn't actually accurate. Though the costume hasn't seen much use, it's already been worn once onscreen. It's possible that the costume will appear again in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, though it should be noted that the character will be wearing a different suit for at least part of the film.

Set photos have shown Nightcrawler and the other members of the X-Men back to wearing matching suits again. Though the reason for the change is unclear, it's being seen as a step back for the characters. This time, the costumes closely resemble the suits featured in the comic book series, New X-Men, but also bear some resemblance to those worn by the original X-Factor team. Whether or not the blue-skinned mutant dons his original red and black suit during X-Men: Dark Phoenix, it's nice for fans of the character to see more of the original suit that was only briefly glimpsed in X-Men: Apocalypse.
