The Definitive Mutant Power Rankings For X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse sequel set in the 1990s

X-Men: Apocalypse is just days away, and with it comes the greatest threat to the survival of mankind: a supremely powerful being hell-bent on the destruction of civilization as we know it. Days of Future Past may have rewritten the timeline and changed the rules of the game, but it certainly hasn't disrupted the distribution of power in Marvel's Mutant Universe. Apocalypse, the star-studded final installment in this particular story arc, will test the limits of friendship and redefine the meaning of 'bad blood.' With 15 powerful mutants set for a head-on collision, who will reign supreme?

Bryan Singer and the team at Fox have created a cinematic event to rival the massive scale of the Avengers franchise. Regardless of box office success, they've already identified the next step for the X-Men film franchise, stacking their deck with household names and popular story lines. But before the franchise goes cosmic, The World's Strangest Superheroes have quite a bit on their plate. This battle with En Sabuh Nur, history's fist mutant, will shake the X-Men universe to its very core and likely eliminate a few familiar faces.

Alliances have been forged. The line in the sand has been drawn. With just ten days to go, here are the definitive Mutant Power Rankings for Fox's highly-anticipated summer blockbuster, X-Men: Apocalypse.

15 Jubilee

X-Men: Apocalypse Mutant Power Rankings Jubilee

No superhero team would be complete without their very own Roman Candle, and boy does Jubilee fill that role nicely. She's a sassy Beverly Hills brat with attitude to spare, and in the Apocalypse timeline she's been with the X-Men for the better part of a decade. Electric-yellow rain slicker aside, Jubilee seems like more of a liability than anything else. Even after multiple attempts to redefine her powers, they remain undeniably lame; how does a teenage mall rat that shoots 'explosive plasmoids' (aka Fireworks) out of her fingertips put up a fight against a teleporting, psionic-katana-wielding ninja? Wasn't there anyone else to plug in here?

There's a reason Jubilee has been cut from almost every X-Men movie so far. We're not sure how her mutant abilities will translate onto the big screen, or how effective they'll be against the X-Men's greatest threat to date. Sorry, J - you're just not the powerhouse we're looking for.

14 Mystique

X-Men: Apocalypse Mutant Power Rankings Mystique

Oh look, another super-helpful mutant fighting to save the world from utter destruction! Mystique's ability to shape-shift into former president George Bush should really come in handy when Storm calls down a super-tsunami. Maybe she'll catch Apocalypse in a room and bore him to death with her Charlie Chaplin impressions?

We know she'll play an integral role in the coming conflict, given her complicated relationship with both Xavier and Magneto. She's got the ability to lead and fights for what she believes in, but heart and passion aren't two of the most useful weapons in a firefight. Fans are surely wondering what she'll be able to do (aside from give moderately-inspiring speeches) once the superfists start flying. Strangely, Mystique seems to be spending quite a bit of time in her human form, so maybe she's got a trick or two up her sleeve.

13 Beast

X-Men: Apocalypse Mutant Power Rankings Beast

Now we're talkin'! Looks like Professor X finally started paying attention to the Mutant Fantasy Draft. Beast brings some favorable abilities to the table: he's got superhuman intellect (cool), superhuman strength (cooler), and can really do some damage once he stops pumping the brakes (coolest!). Beast isn't the fastest or most powerful member of the X-Men, but he's definitely a great asset during close-quarters, hand-to-hand combat.

It's yet to be seen whether the Bouncing Blue Beast will unleash the full extent of his fury; if he goes full throttle (like he did against Kraven the Hunter), there's no telling what kind of havoc he might wreak. Hopefully the Magilla Gorilla decides to go toe-to-toe with the next mutant on our list, Big Bird. Er, Angel.

12 Angel / Archangel

X-Men: Apocalypse Mutant Power Rankings Angel

If you've been paying attention to the trailers, you've probably seen Angel throwing down in what appears to be a cage match with Nightcrawler. You've also probably seen his epic metal wings. We're thinking that the Apocalypse version of Angel will be a powerful warrior; in the comics, he's a disheartened hero who joins the Dark Side after suffering grievous injuries. Will we witness his full transformation from Angel to Archangel on May 27th? Will he be given an additional set of extraordinary powers (including super-human healing) for joining the alliance of evil? Apocalypse and his other Horsemen better hope so - otherwise, they just rounded out their little band of baddies with a blonder version of the Duck from Duck Hunt.

It's worth noting that in modern story lines (like X-Force), Angel has the ability to go Archangel at will. He's a destructive force that can turn the tide of any battle - that's the kind of Angel we're hoping to see in a few weeks.

11 Havok

X-Men Apocalypse Trailer Havok

It's been confirmed that Havok and Cyclops will remain siblings in the X-Men cinematic universe, although what's happened to Alex Summers since we saw him last in Days of Future Past remains largely a mystery. Timeline issues aside, Havok and his uncontrollable energy blasts will make an excellent addition to the X team as they battle Apocalypse.

We expect the Summers siblings to serve as an awesome one-two punch for the good guys: both mutants absorb energy and emit massive, (sort of) controlled blasts when needed. Havok's inability to reliably control his mutant powers makes him a bit of a wildcard, however, so fans will have to wait to see if he's capable of harnessing the gift. His First Class debut didn't exactly inspire loads of confidence, but after seeing the final trailer, we're betting that he's ready to bring the pain against Apocalypse and his horsemen.

10 Nightcrawler

X-Men: Apocalypse Mutant Power Rankings

Who wouldn't want a swashbuckling, teleporting, blue mini-devil on their team? Nightcrawler made his film debut in X-2, though Smit-McPhee's rendition appears to be capable of joining the fray in a big way. While we haven't seen much of Nightcrawler in the trailers (get it?), one fact remains: you can't kill what you can't see, and it's hard to keep this little blue elf in your sights.

The German acrobat-turned charming mutant hero will have his hands full on May 27th - he'll have to rely heavily on his interdimensional teleportation and prehensile tail to survive the struggle. Fingers crossed, we'll get to see this fan-favorite cross swords with Psylocke.

9 Cyclops

X-Men: Apocalypse Mutant Power Rankings

The trailers have shown us that Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, will be struggling to control his Earth-shattering laser blasts as Apocalypse arrives. Depending on how you look at it, that could be a good or bad thing; if he's unable to reel his mutant abilities in enough to use them effectively in combat, the team may be doomed. However, having little-to-no experience might just allow him to adopt a 'shoot first, ask questions later' approach. In the glimpses we've seen thus far, he's powerful enough to match Storm's powerful lightning blasts, so we can only imagine how formidable he may become.

Between comic book covers, Cyclops is master tactician and a weapon of mass destruction, so Apocalypse could serve as the catalyst that helps him transition into one of the mutant world's most fearsome combatants. Look for a young Scott Summers to bring the heat with his brother, Havok, in this epic on-screen battle.

8 Wolverine

X-Men: Apocalypse Final Trailer - Wolverine

We can't wait to see Singer's deadly new take on the Ol' Canucklehead. He's made it clear that Apocalypse will introduce a very different Wolverine, one that more closely resembles the 'Weapon X' death dealer we've been begging for. It's already been confirmed that the next Wolverine film (set well after the events of Apocalypse) has embraced the R-rating, meaning we might get finally get a glimpse of his trademark berserker rage.

Wolvie's battle-forged skills, nigh-limitless fury, and ability to recover from even the most grievous wounds, secure him the number eight spot on this list. He'd register a little bit higher if he could, y'know, fly or pick up an entire city with his mind, but this is still one mutant you don't wanna tussle with. Just ask Cyclops.

7 Storm

X-Men Apocalypse Trailer Storm Lightning

Do you think Storm gave herself that awesome mohawk before Apocalypse showed up, or opted into it once she chose to fight for the bad guys? (We know what the comics say, but Fox isn't afraid to take creative liberties when it suits them.) Either way, this *almost* omega-level mutant can control Earth's magnetic field and every element, channeling her powers into concentrated strikes or blanketing the entire planet with devastating weather patterns.

Apocalypse is wise to choose Storm as one of his Horsemen, as there's apparently no limit to her abilities. She can play the role of protector, shrouding her team in fog, or act as heavy artillery, blasting away at her opponents with lightning bolts. While Storm eventually becomes one of the X-Men's greatest leaders, there's a huge gap between the events of Apocalypse and present day, leaving room for a lot of interpretation. We'd love to see this crossover happen, too!

6 Psylocke

X-Men: Apocalypse Mutant Power Rankings Psylocke

Apocalypse's fourth and final Horsemen, Psylocke, is the oddball of this ensemble; she's never had a prominent role in the X-Men film franchise before (brief appearance in Final Stand), leaving very few benchmarks to gauge her on-screen power potential. It's a relatively safe bet that Fox wants to introduce her new character in a big way, and the quick looks we've gotten from trailers indicate that she won't disappoint.

Going strictly from the comics, Psylocke is a powerful telepath who can also attack her enemies with telekinetic blasts. As her powers progress, she gains the ability to wield awesome psychic weaponry, ranging from a small energy knife to a full-blown Katana. We've seen Psylocke brandishing her signature purple psi-blade in the trailer, so it looks like she's already honed her skills quite a bit.

5 Quicksilver

Keeping up with Quicksilver is as hard as keeping up with his ever-changing origin story. (Seriously guys, it's getting to be too much. For the love of Glob, pick a father!) Heritage issues aside, Quicksilver showed the world how handy super-speed can really be in Days of Future Past. That scene was downright epic, so we can only imagine how awesome his three-minute montage in Apocalypse will be. Bryan Singer says it took one and a half months to film, so chances are Singer and his FX team crafted something truly special.

He's incredibly fast (dodge four bullets, disarm eight bad guys, eat 52 chicken tacos fast), possesses superhuman healing abilities, and can think a million miles a minute. When it comes to manipulating multiple variables on the battlefield, no one does it better than Quickie (just trying it out. Thoughts?). In case you forgot - no one's beating this guy in a footrace anytime soon, even if he does still live in his mom's basement.

4 Magneto

X-Men: Apocalypse Mutant Power Rankings Magneto

These teams are starting to feel a bit lopsided, wouldn't you say? The Sinister Squad (made that up) that wants to destroy / enslave / eradicate humanity has four of the top seven most powerful mutants, and the Good Guys have... Jubilee? Magneto - the guy who really can't decide whether he wants to play BFFs with Xavier or conquer the known world - probably joins Apocalypse with zero to none resistance, sliding into En Sabah Nur's DMs as soon as he wakes up.

Regardless of how Magneto gets there, there's no denying that he is a massive threat to the forces of good. In Days of Future Past and basically every X-Men movie ever, Magneto is powerful enough to single-handedly take on multiple mutants at once. With a team of warriors, a giant bird, and a God by his side, it's almost impossible to determine the upper limits of his power. The trailer is loaded with scenes of entire cities crumbling and disintegrating, so there's a pretty good that we'll get an overcharged, overpowered Magneto on May 27th.

3 Professor X

James McAvoy as Professor Xavier in X-Men: Apocalypse

Professor X, the founder of the X-Men and an Omega-level telepath, will lose his hair during the course of this movie. Perhaps it's male pattern baldness, perhaps it's the stress of pushing his powers to their limits. Does the cause truly matter? Probably. Does he look decidedly more Bad-Ass after he does? Definitely.

The trailer implies that Apocalypse will overpower Professor X early in the film, leading to his capture. That's not a knock on Xavier or his tremendous telepathic abilities: if he could take Apocalypse one-on-one, the movie would be about 17 seconds long. Professor X is considered the world's strongest mind, and his prowess is only matched or beaten by one particular individual in the entire X-Men universe. We won't say who, but her name rhymes with Bean Slay.

Scarily enough, early reports had X joining Apocalypse and fighting against his beloved students. Can you even imagine how lopsided this battle would be if X had ended up as the Fourth Horseman?

2 Jean Grey

X-Men: Apocalypse Mutant Power Rankings Jean Grey

As of right now, Apocalypse's version of Jean Grey remains the film's biggest question mark. To their credit, Fox has done an excellent job keeping Sophie Turner (the new Jean) and her Omega-level powers off-screen. Sure, there's been plenty of shots with her standing around (and screaming!), but there hasn't been a single clue to indicate whether or not she's begun to realize her full potential.

We're choosing to interpret the very noticeable lack of Jean Grey as an intentional tease: why ruin the movie's biggest surprise in the trailer? If On-Screen Jean is as powerful as comic book Jean, Fox has been wise to keep her defining moment out of the media. Embracing the full power of the Phoenix Force, Jean is a nearly invincible mutant capable of destroying entire worlds in the blink of an eye. Though she most likely won't be absorbing the energy of an entire star in this film, we're hoping that Apocalypse pushes Jean for enough to unleash even the tiniest bit of the Phoenix's wrath.

After all, Sansa Stark deserves retribution. The North Remembers!

1 Apocalypse

Oscar Isaac as En Sabah Nur in X-Men: Apocalypse

Apocalypse. The very name should send shudders down your spine. He's accumulated (read: forcefully taken) a crazy set of secret mutant abilities over the years; if he uses them all during this epic showdown, we can't promise the X-Men will come out on top. Or in one piece.

En Sabah Nur, The First One, can manipulate his own molecular structure, growing to massive sizes or turning his limbs into living weapons. He's effectively immortal, capable of healing from any wound, absorbing massive amounts of energy (sorry, Cylcops!), and teleporting great distances. Even still, what makes The Forever Walker even more terrifying are his innate powers of persuasion - over a nearly 5,000 year existence, he's gained an extremist cult following and established himself as a God-like figure. Most of Apocalypse's followers come freely, drawn to his unrivaled powers and drunk on the promise of everlasting life.

Backed by three of Earth's strongest mutants and a guy with big fluffy wings, Apocalypse is a universal threat that must be stopped. Will the Strangest Super-Heroes of All win the day, Or will the forces of evil usher in the Age of Apocalypse?

Can you think of any other mutants who should be ranked? Did we get anything wrong? Does Jubilee deserve more respect than this? Let us know in the comments!
