WARNING: Spoilers for X-Men #5 ahead!

Lorna Dane, the magnetic mutant known as Polaris, is finally getting her opportunity to prove that she is as powerful as her father Magneto in the upcoming X-Men #5. Polaris was the winner of the fan-selected position on Krakoa's newly formed X-Men team, and in their newest adventure, she needs to quickly live up to her fans' expectations, as well as keep her cool in the face of her father's current legal predicament in The Trial of Magneto.

Polaris has a long and complicated history with both her father and with the X-Men in general, usually being portrayed as a hero, but several times losing control over her powers due to mental illness and a series of traumatic events she has endured. Since settling into her new home on Krakoa, however, Lorna has stabilized a lot, becoming a major part of Northstar's X-Factor investigatory team. It has been established that Lorna has vast powers of magnetism, much like Magneto, and in the newest X-Men battle, she displays a new twist on one of her father's darkest attacks.

In X-Men #5 - illustrated by Ze Carlos, Javier Pina, and Pepe Larraz with writing by Gerry Duggan - the new team is up against an old foe, the rabidly anti-mutant Reavers, only this time their enemies have some serious upgrades, including tranquilizers that negate mutant powers. The Reavers have taken out the entire X-Men team with their attacks, and Lorna is the only one who was seemingly not shot with a power-dampening dart. As the last mutant standing, Polaris needs to find a way to weaponize those around her and save her team, using a fresh twist on one of her father's worst attacks. Have a look at a sneak peek:

One of the most infamous moments in Magneto's supervillain career came in the '90s event Fatal Attraction, when Magneto literally ripped the adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton, getting closer to killing him than anyone else ever has. While it may sound like there is no way for this attack to ever be considered "good," in the preview for the upcoming X-Men #5 it appears that Lorna is using a similar attack on X-23 to "use her" as a weapon. It is clear that Polaris's signature green-magnetic glow is around Laura Kinney, who still appears unconscious, implying that Lorna is about to use Wolverine as a living weapon, by controlling her adamantium skeleton.

Hopefully, Lorna and Laura have discussed this type of attack strategy before, because non-consensually using an unconscious teammate's body as a weapon is not the best look for Lorna. Assuming that this plan was discussed as a team, however, it is a truly intelligent and devious use of Polaris' vast magnetism and her father's brutal thinking, and it may very well lead to Polaris saving the entire X-Men team. Make sure to check out X-Men #5 to see if Polaris' innovative use of Magneto's darkest attack comes to fruition and if Lorna is able to save her team, officially cementing her as a key member of the Krakoan X-Men.
