In the original mythology for The X-Files, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) attempted to prevent an apocalypse and overthrow a faction of humans that were in league with aliens, who were planning to return and colonize the Earth. Now, in The X-Files event series, the super duo are faced with a very different kind of conspiracy – a conspiracy of men – consisting of the same syndicate, colluding to enslave the rest of humanity by using alien technology to infect the population.
The X-Files will air its sixth and final episode ('My Struggle II') on February 22nd, 2016. Question is, will the revival show, which has been a worldwide ratings success thus far, go out with a bang?
Well, if the latest teaser (watch it above) is anything to go by, then the answer is a resounding ‘YES’ - quite literally too, as Mulder brings a gun to the highly anticipated meeting with his longstanding nemesis, better known as The Cigarette Smoking Man. That video also intercuts never-before-seen footage from the upcoming episode with main-cast interviews and promises “an amazing climax”, whereby Mulder, Scully and Ted O’Malley (Joel McHale) – amongst many others – find themselves exposed to the aforementioned ‘deadly’ virus. The outcome of this doomsday scenario is looking far from hopeful, with Duchovny even closing the featurette by joking that the series protagonists are “next in line” to perish.
FOX's official synopsis for the final episode reads:
The investigations that Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) previously began with conspiracy theorist and web-TV show host Tad O'Malley (guest star Joel McHale) seem to have awakened powerful enemies. A widespread panic begins as people all over the country suddenly start falling gravely ill, and Scully must look within to try and find a cure. Meanwhile, Mulder confronts the man whom he believes to be behind it all, but another figure from Mulder and Scully's past may prove to be the key to their salvation in the all-new "My Struggle II" season finale episode of THE X-FILES airing Monday, Feb. 22 (8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
The series appears to be coming full circle with its premiere episode ('My Struggle'), which first introduced us to the concept of extraterrestrial technology being used on human parties, though we shouldn't expect 'the truth' to be wrapped up and delivered in a neat little case file; this is The X-Files after all. In fact, if we want to believe that the series will continue beyond the revival then the forthcoming death, destruction and disaster should be concluded with a climactic cliffhanger, which might even see some of our seasoned favourites fall down in the series' body count.
Even though it is unimaginable that we would lose Duchovny and Anderson as the show's leading characters, FOX could consider following in the footsteps of its other recently revived franchise 24, which originally chronicled the adventures of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) over the course of nine seasons. 24: Live Another Day marked the return of the show (four years after the series had come to an end) and now the franchise is being rebooted with an all-new cast for the upcoming 24: Legacy.
