Syfy released new images and a poster for Wynonna Earp season 2 ahead of its June premiere date. In the wake of Hollywood jumping on the superhero/comic book adaptation trend, the tide of similar content has spilled over into television, with a number of networks and streaming services trying their hands at superheroes and/or other kinds of comic adaptations. One of Syfy's original series, Wynonna Earp, is one such adaptation, inspired by the comic series of the same name created by Beau Smith.
Wynonna Earp follows the titular character, played on Syfy's series by Melanie Scrofano, who is the descendant of famed lawman Wyatt Earp and entrusted with his revolver, Peacemaker. With the gun, Wynonna is tasked with breaking the Earp curse by killing the list of revenants (those Wyatt killed throughout his life who have become demons of a sort) who inhabit her hometown of Purgatory. Thankfully, Wynonna has a small group of allies to help her complete her mission, and all members of Team Wynonna return in new images for season 2.
TV Insider released a batch of season 2 character images, which you can find in the gallery below along with the season poster released by Variety, along with an exclusive clip from the premiere episode, 'Steel Bars and Stone Walls'. In addition to Wynonna, the images feature her sister Waverly Earp (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), Deputy Marshal Xavier Dolls (Shamier Anderson), Wyatt's immortal partner Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon), and local police officer Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell). Talking to TV Insider, Wynonna Earp creator and showrunner Emily Andras recapped where viewers left the titular hero and her band of misfit helpers at the end of season 1, and teased what fans can expect from the gang in season 2:
Shooting your presumed-dead, now-evil older sister to save her from a Cthulhu-esque tentacle demon and watching your beloved boss get dragged off to a black ops prison by a covert paranormal government agency tends to leave some psychic scars. ... [In season 2, Wynonna] also has to contend with the new supernatural nasties that flooded the Ghost River Triangle when the [protective] boundary came down in the finale.
Certainly, Wynonna Earp may have started off season 1 with a relatively simply mission statement - hunt down all the revenants and break the Earp curse - but everything got a whole lot trickier with the introduction of Dolls' strained relationship with the Black Badge division and Willa's (Natalie Krill) plot with Bobo Del Rey (Michael Eklund). Now, with Dolls taken in by Black Badge and something evil infesting Waverly, Wynonna will no doubt have her work cut out for her in season 2.
To that end, Andras revealed what the themes of season 2 will be: "Free will and sacrifice. Are we ever in control of our own fate? How far would you go to save the people you work with/the people you love?" Of course, Wynonna only grudgingly set out to break the Earp curse in season 1, but had seemingly accepted it as her fate by the finale. Still, considering the prices she's paid - and those she may still have to pay - season 2 will further explore her own fate and those of her friends and family. That will likely provide for an exciting second season, and thankfully fans of Wynonna Earp need only wait one more week for its premiere.
Wynonna Earp season 2 premieres Friday June 9 at 10pm on Syfy.
