WWE made its favorite kind of splash earlier this week, signing Logan Paul to a contract that made headlines from publications that don't typically cover professional wrestling. Such is the media magnetism that comes with Paul. That's certainly one of his draws as a performer, but there's also no denying that he defied even the most bullish of expectations during his tag-team match at WrestleMania 38.

Fans in attendance have stated that Paul got the biggest chorus of boos across the entire weekend when he mocked Eddie Guerrero before hitting what was, admittedly, a picture-perfect frog splash. It's those kinds of instincts that will make Logan Paul work long-term in WWE, as opposed to him being just another celebrity flash-in-the-pan that doesn't work out in the company's favor

Given to how well Paul worked heel at WrestleMania, Dave Meltzer expressed concerns about how WWE will try to use Logan leading up to and at SummerSlam, where he's being positioned to wrestle The Miz. As per the July 11 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter: "WWE is taking a guy who people hate in the real world and trying to make him a face by putting him with Miz, even though all the prior attempts to make him a face ended with him being booed. But his value would be if he can bring new eyeballs to the product in 12-34 past the novelty phase. The company is chasing people with social media followings to get younger viewers and time will tell how well it pays off. But he’s going to be around for a few years."

Meltzer's concerns certainly seem valid. Again, Paul received the largest negative reaction during a weekend where Roman Reigns unified WWE's two major men's titles in a forgettable main event against Brock Lesnar. If Paul is getting booed more than that, then perhaps the idea of using him as a face isn't a particularly good one. The Miz can make darn near anything work with anyone, but Paul won't be able to feud with him forever. Eventually, he'll need to be a stand-alone character, and there's really no reason for him to stray too far from the personality that he's made work on social media.

It's that personality, of course, that makes him such an outstanding natural heel in the first place. He's comfortable on the mic, has a fantastic presence, and seems to understand how to work up a crowd while in the ring. WWE trying to force a natural heel into a babyface spot is very typical, but there were also reports that indicated that Paul would only work the WrestleMania 38 match if he was turned face afterward. He ate a skull-crushing finale from The Miz after the bout, which supposedly turned him and set up this program for SummerSlamHaving WWE under contract is one thing, but the WWE Universe will not be beholden to such paperwork. They'll boo who they want, and it'll be fascinating to see if Paul can change the audience's mind about him in the coming weeks.
