The first episode of What We Do in the Shadows season 4 begins with a twist that completely changes the series: Guillermo has moved on from Nandor and now has a partner. The recently Emmy-nominated FX mockumentary premiered the first two episodes of its fourth season on Tuesday. WWDITS follows the antics of four vampire roommates—Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nandor (Kayvan Novak), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch)—living in Staten Island with a human familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén).

What We Do in the Shadows season 4 will further develop the complicated relationship between Guillermo and Nandor, or “Nandermo.” Though Guillermo hilariously (and oftentimes sadly) keeps the entire household from dissolving into chaos, only Nandor is his master. In season 1, Nandor disrespects Guillermo and mindlessly abuses his power, but Guillermo's unrequited love for Nandor keeps him around. However, their initially unhealthy power dynamic evolves. In WWDITS seasons 2 and 3, Guillermo comes into his Van Helsing heritage as a skilled vampire slayer, protecting his housemates from undead intruders, and learns to advocate for better work conditions under Nandor. Nandor gradually comes to see Guillermo as a friend and trusted companion, and season 3 ends with the former inviting the latter on an intimate, ambiguously romantic journey around the world.

However, the premiere of What We Do in the Shadows season 4 suggests Nandermo may not be endgame as some viewers had perhaps hoped. Season 4 begins with Guillermo and Nandor returning to Staten Island from separate travels, their tandem trek having been derailed by Laszlo in What We Do in the Shadows season 3's ending. Though Nandor insists the first order of business is finding himself a wife to assuage his supposed loneliness, he is more affectionate toward Guillermo than ever. But, in a surprising scene in WWDITS season 4, episode 2, “The Lamp,” Guillermo takes a private call outside, telling the person on the phone he misses them. Guillermo then turns to the mockumentary crew and coyly admits he’s “in a very good place right now. As far as [love is] concerned.” This is the first time Guillermo has expressed romantic interest in anyone except Nandor, thwarting audience predictions that Nandermo’s season 4 reunion might quickly turn romantic.

What Guillermo's New Love Interest Means For Nandor & What We Do In The Shadows Season 4

Guillermo’s new love interest will surely shake up the WWDITS status quo. In an interview about WWDITS' Nandor and Guillermo's potential romance, Guillén said season 4 is about Guillermo’s internal journey. He is no longer the naïve, pining familiar, but instead an independent, self-realized vampire slayer in a fulfilling relationship. This refreshing power dynamic shift will make for fantastic narrative development. Audiences can look forward to the likes of an awkward introduction of Guillermo’s partner and the vampires, a group evening out at Nadja’s new vampire nightclub, or even a double date with Guillermo, a jealous Nandor, and both of their significant others. The newly-partnered Van Helsing now has the upper hand, and WWDITS showrunners would be remiss not to take advantage of this comedic and narrative gold mine.

What We Do in the Shadows season 4 will likely take Nandermo in one of two directions: solid friendship or tentative romance. Guillermo and Nandor could develop a healthy connection founded on mutual respect—a bond arguably more touching and demonstrative of character growth than a romantic relationship. Nandor could see Guillermo as an equal and promise to make amends for his poor behavior through true friendship—a full-circle conclusion to Nandermo. However, season 4 could also address the pair’s undeniable romantic spark. Though Guillermo appears to be going strong with his partner, the titles of episodes 6 and 9—“The Wedding” and “Freddie”—indicate potential romantic drama.

What We Do in the Shadows has been renewed for a fifth and sixth season, so season 4 is unlikely to tie up every loose Nandermo thread. But audiences can stay tuned for what is sure to be 10 episodes’ worth of refreshing relationship development between Guillermo and Nandor. It will be interesting to see where they are by the end of season 4.
