If Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions has one good trait during the new Netflix era or before, it’s the sheer hilariousness of some of the jokes - sometimes unexpected, sometimes physical, and sometimes only funny because it just keeps happening. If it has major character flaws as a production company, it’s not knowing when those things will work or when or just taking them too far.

All of these are on display in abundance in The Wrong Missy - and in true Sandler form you never know which one you’re going to get until halfway through the joke. Would it really be Happy Madison without some pretty questionable humor, though?

Cringe: Tim Texting From the Hotel

As far as he knows, Tim’s texting the hot woman he just met in the hotel, not realizing the mistake he’s making. If there’s one thing David Spade is good at, it’s playing the straight man in any given comedy, but it just falls flat in this scene. He had just met the woman, and to go along with something he totally wasn’t expecting from her in his put-upon way just didn’t hit an actually funny spot.

Hilarious: Missy’s Laughing

It doesn’t seem to matter where, or how funny it actually is, but Missy’s out of control laughter at the most inappropriate times and in the worst places is hilarious every time. Lauren Lapkus is great at physical comedy and it brings it from something that should just be annoying when it’s repeated to something that’s genuinely funny on its own.

Cringe: The Plane Incident

Tim finds out his mixup with the text messages at the worst time- the beginning of a nice long flight to Hawaii. Missy gives him some dog tranquilizers and gets… more than a little inappropriate with Tim while he’s knocked up. He wakes up and notices- and then notices everyone else on the place notices, too. It goes way past the point of actual comedy and veers right into assault.

Hilarious: Komante’s Air Check

If Rob Schneider only existed to do a little slapstick in Adam Sandler movies, it would be a good reason to exist.

It’s hard to explain just what’s so funny about his extremely excessive and overacted air checking, but it’s hilarious in the way that it breaks up the flow of the movie for what seems like a ludicrously- but for some reason extremely funny- long time.

Cringe: Missy Meeting Tim’s Boss

David Spade Lauren Lapkus The Wrong Missy

Despite Tim’s best efforts to keep her away from the meet and greet, she shows up anyway and introduces herself in the worst possible way. Not only is she grating and more than a little obnoxious, she mentions a few things that you definitely don’t want your boss to hear, mostly about her (really non-existent) sex life with Tim. Given that it hearkens back to the plane incident, it doesn’t really hit the spot comedically.

Hilarious: The Free Willy Discussion

While Tim and his boss are having a dramatic problem in the shark cage, everyone on the boat is dancing and having a good time. Somehow, Nate and Komante have gotten into a discussion of Free Willy.

Nate thinks it’s a good movie, but Komante thinks it can’t be without a likable whale. How he defines the likability of a whale is up for question, but that’s what makes it funny.

Cringe: Tim’s Dream About His Ex

Tim helps himself to some of Missy’s dog tranquilizers and conks out in the hotel room after Missy’s cliff jumping, only to have sex dreams about his ex. He wakes up just to discover he’s actually having relations with Missy, and the whole scene spirals to cringe pretty quickly. Between Missy herself coming out with some of her worst lines and Tim’s just going along with it, the whole thing just makes you feel bad for everyone in it.

Hilarious: Missy Actually Is All the Weird Things She Says She Is

Missy- played by Lauren Lapkus- spends most of the movie claiming to be trained to do a wide variety of things that make no sense together- or even possible. Whatever she claims to be usually works out when she tries using it, but in some way that really seems coincidental. When Tim takes time to get to know her towards the end, he finds out she really is trained in all of those things and more.

Cringe: The Threesome Scene

Missy ends up in the hotel room with Julia, Tim’s ex, and a lot of booze. When Tim comes back to the room, Missy goes on about how he’s obviously still hung up on Julia and he needs to sleep with her one last time for them both to get over it.

Tim isn’t so into the idea at first, and only agrees when Missy says it’ll be a threesome. Since it doesn’t go well and Tim is just Tim, it definitely just leaves everything feeling a little cringey.

Hilarious: The Ending

Tim gets caught out for his Missy mix-up and spends the last part trying to get Missy back. In true rom-com fashion, he tracks her down and she isn’t willing to take him back at first. He finally convinces her about how he really wants her and keeping to the rom-com roots the music swells-only to suddenly cut out and go back to the normal bar sounds. A small subversion and joke, but one that works really well in the movie.
