A Wrinkle in Time Tessers in New Year With Posters & TV Spot

advertising

Disney has revealed three motion posters and a TV commercial for its upcoming A Wrinkle in Time. The film — which stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and others — is an adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 novel.

A Wrinkle in Time will tell the story of Meg Murry (Storm Reid) as a young girl who embarks on a quest to save her father, an astrophysicist imprisoned on a faraway planet. Winfrey, Witherspoon, and Kaling play the roles of shapeshifting, space-traveling beings who assist Murry on her journey (Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who, respectively). And now, three motion posters put the trio in the spotlight.

Disney uploaded the motion posters, as well as a new TV spot, to the Facebook page of A Wrinkle in Time. The commercial is a short (31 seconds long) and tense sequence of quick cuts, and the motion posters show off Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who with a rippling water effect. The posters also serve as happy New Year messages, of sorts: Their captions say, "Welcome to 2018, warriors."

Disney has provided fans with a slow drip of promotional materials for A Wrinkle in Time in anticipation of its spring 2018 release, having released a trailer in mid-November. That trailer more lengthily laid out the film's plot, in which Murry, her brother, and her friend travel the universe by manipulating a fifth dimension. The New Years TV spot, in contrast, is a briefer, more action-packed look into the movie and its dramatic elements. And if the commercial's music is especially exciting, expect the movie to offer similar audio thrills: The film's composer is Ramin Djawadi, who also scored Game of Thrones.

At the helm of A Wrinkle in Time is director Ava DuVernay, who has built herself a strong reputation with films like Selma and 13th, a documentary about race and incarceration in the U.S. And with its racially diverse and woman-centric cast, A Wrinkle in Time has given many fans cause for optimism, as far as representation goes. With ongoing conversations about sexual abuse and racism in Hollywood, the movie — its cast, its director, its narrative, and more — seems more appropriate than ever. It's a tale of light and darkness, of forging alliances and pursuing justice beyond the known limits of the universe. What's more, A Wrinkle in Time imagines a certain kind of heroism: A kind that is more than just white and male. Given the state of the world, entering the New Year with such an inclusive vision is not only refreshing, but necessary.
